Weekend Actuals Update: |
With actuals now in, Warner’s Annabelle: Creation debuted with $35.006 M, which was right in line with Sunday’s studio estimate. |
Other weekend actuals for the frame include: Dunkirk ($10.884 M), The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature ($8.342 M), The Dark Tower ($7.820 M), Girls Trip ($6.466 M),
The Emoji Movie ($6.451 M), Spider-Man: Homecoming ($6.023 M), Kidnap ($5.097 M), The Glass Castle ($4.679 M) and Atomic Blonde ($4.481 M). |
Weekend Estimates Update: |
Warner’s Annabelle: Creation was off to a strong first place start this weekend with an estimated $35.04 M. The low-budget horror sequel exceeded expectations and performed quite well with its
price tag in mind. Annabelle: Creation was likely aided by the current marketplace in general being slow for mid-August and by solid critical reviews. The film currently has a score of 7.228 on our
LoveHate Rate aggregate measurement of critical and online ratings. Annabelle: Creation did open a slim 5.6 percent below the
$37.13 M debut of 2014’s Annabelle, though Annabelle: Creation hadn’t been expected to match the opening weekend heights of its predecessor. Annabelle Creation opened 11.2 percent ahead of the
$31.52 M launch of last year’s The Purge: Election Year. |
Annabelle: Creation started out with $15.0 M on Friday (which included an estimated $4.0 M from Thursday night shows that began at 7PM), decreased a sizable 22.4 percent on Saturday to take in
$11.64 M and is estimated to decline 27.8 percent on Sunday to gross $8.40 M. Annabelle: Creation received a B rating on CinemaScore, which is very solid for a horror film. Going forward, Annabelle: Creation
could be helped out by the overall marketplace looking to remain slow (even by late August and early September standards), until fellow Warner Bros. horror film IT arrives in theatres on September 8. |
Internationally, Annabelle: Creation debuted with an estimated $35.0 M from 39 markets. That brings the film’s international total to $36.7 M and early global haul to $71.7 M. Key
international debuts this weekend included $6.6 M in Korea, $3.9 M in Indonesia, $2.9 M in France, $2.6 M in the U.K. and $2.3 M in Russia. |
Fellow Warner Bros. release Dunkirk placed in a distant second with an estimated $11.41 M. Dunkirk continued to hold up very well this weekend, as the film declined 33.4 percent from last
weekend. Dunkirk has grossed a healthy $153.71 M in 24 days, which already gives the film a current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 3.04 to 1. Dunkirk is running 4.5 percent ahead of the $147.04 M
grossed by 2014’s Interstellar after 24 days of wide release. |
Internationally, Dunkirk grossed an estimated $14.5 M this weekend from 62 markets. The film has grossed $210.0 M to date internationally and $363.6 M so far globally. Dunkirk
grossed an estimated $3.5 M in the U.K. this weekend, where it has grossed $58.5 M in 24 days. |
Open Road’s The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature debuted in third place with an estimated $8.93 M. The Nut Job 2 opened below its relatively modest expectations, which had tended to range
from $10 M to $15 M heading into the weekend. The Nut Job 2 debuted 54.0 percent below the $19.423 M launch of 2014’s The Nut Job, as there ultimately just wasn’t much demand for a Nut Job sequel.
The Nut Job 2 easily delivered the smallest debut ever for a film opening in at least 4,000 locations; a record that had recently been set by The Emoji Movie with its $24.53 M start. Poor critical reviews
didn’t help matters for The Nut Job 2 this weekend. The film currently has a rating of just 3.838 on our LoveHate Rate aggregate
measurement. However, The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature appears to be going over better with its target audience, as it received a B+ rating on CinemScore. |
Sony’s The Dark Tower was down three spots and a sharp 58.9 percent from last weekend to place in fourth with an estimated $7.88 M. The Dark Tower has grossed $34.31 M in ten days, which
is on the low end of the film’s scaled back expectations. Poor critical reviews and mixed word of mouth are clearly continuing to take a toll on the film. The Dark Tower is running an underwhelming 44.2 percent
behind the $61.53 M ten-day take of last year’s The Magnificent Seven (which fell 55.0 percent in its second weekend to gross $15.63 M). |
Fellow Sony release The Emoji Movie rounded out the weekend’s top five with an estimated $6.60 M. The Emoji Movie declined a respectable 45.0 percent from last weekend and likely
received a small boost this weekend from the softer than expected start of The Nut Job 2. The Emoji Movie has grossed a solid $63.59 M in 17 days, as the film continues to perform in line with expectations
and remain largely critic proof. The Emoji Movie is running 10.3 percent ahead of the $57.65 M 17-day haul of 2015’s Pixels. |
Universal’s Girls Trip claimed sixth place with an estimated $6.52 M. Girls Trip was down a solid 42.8 percent from last weekend. Girls Trip has grossed a stronger than
expected $97.19 M in 24 days. That already places the film’s current total gross to opening weekend ratio at 3.12 to 1 and leaves the film just $2.81 M away from reaching the $100 M domestic milestone. Girls Trip
is running 13.4 percent ahead of the $85.68 M 24-day gross of last year’s Bad Moms. |
Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming followed in seventh with an estimated $6.10 M. After initial front-loading, Spider-Man: Homecoming continues to stabilize nicely, as the film was down
only 31.0 percent this weekend. Spider-Man: Homecoming passed the $300 M domestic mark on Thursday and has grossed a healthy $306.45 M in 38 Days. Spider-Man: Homecoming currently ranks in 63rd place on the
all-time unadjusted domestic list. |
Lionsgate’s The Glass Castle was off to a respectable start this weekend with an estimated ninth place take of $4.88 M. The Glass Castle was playing in a modest 1,461 locations this
weekend, which gave the film a per-location average of $3,337 for the frame. The Glass Castle debuted 48.3 percent ahead of the $3.28 M start of The Zookeeper’s Wife earlier this year
(though The Zookeeper’s Wife started out in just 541 locations) and 26.1 percent below the $6.60 M start of last year’s Florence Foster Jenkins (which debuted in 1,528 locations). Critical reviews for
The Glass Castle have been mixed (the film has a current LoveHate Rate of 6.469), but the film looks to be going over better with
audiences as it received an encouraging A- rating on CinemaScore. |
