Weekend Box Office Report
July 7 - July 9, 2017

By Daniel Garris

Weekend Actuals Update:

With actuals now in, Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming finished in line with Sunday’s studio estimate with a spectacular debut of $117.028 M.

Universal’s Despicable Me 3 was down slightly from Sunday’s studio estimate with a second weekend take of $33.580 M.

Other weekend actuals for the frame include: Baby Driver ($13.003 M), Wonder Woman ($9.822 M), Transformers: The Last Knight ($6.377 M), Cars 3 ($5.382 M), The House ($4.778 M), The Big Sick ($3.577 M), 47 Meters Down ($2.714 M) and The Beguiled ($2.063 M).

Weekend Estimates Update:

Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming was off to a spectacular start this weekend with an estimated debut of $117.00 M. Spider-Man: Homecoming debuted towards the higher end of its lofty and wide-ranging expectations. The film delivered the second largest opening weekend ever for both Sony and the Spider-Man franchise, as Spider-Man: Homecoming debuted just ahead of the $114.84 M opening of 2002’s Spider-Man and below the $151.12 M start of 2007’s Spider-Man 3. Spider-Man: Homecoming started out 27.7 percent stronger than the $91.61 M launch of 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, as bringing Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the addition of Iron Man and strong critical reviews all helped to benefit Spider-Man: Homecoming and renew interest in the franchise.

Spider-Man: Homecoming registered the third largest opening weekend of 2017 to date. The film opened 13.3 percent ahead of the recent $103.25 M start of Wonder Woman and 20.1 percent below the recent $146.51 M launch of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Spider-Man: Homecoming also registered the fifth largest debut ever for the month of July and the second largest opening ever over the post-Independence Day weekend frame (behind only the $135.64 M launch of 2006’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest).

Spider-Man: Homecoming did display initial front-loading this weekend. The film started out with $50.86 M on Friday (which included an estimated $15.4M from Thursday night shows that began at 7PM), decreased 27.0 percent on Saturday to take in $37.15 M and is estimated to decline 21.9 percent on Sunday to gross $29.00 M. Spider-Man: Homecoming has gone over very well with critics and online users. The film currently has a healthy score of 8.701 on our LoveHate Rate aggregate measurement of critical and online ratings, which is the sixth highest rating for any qualifying 2017 release thus far. Spider-Man: Homecoming also appears to be going over very well with audiences as well, as the film received a strong A rating on CinemaScore.

Internationally, Spider-Man: Homecoming debuted with $140.0 M from 56 markets. According to Sony the film opened 30% stronger than The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in the same international markets. The global start for Spider-Man: Homecoming stands at $257.0 M. Key international starts for Spider-Man: Homecoming included $25.8M in Korea, $12.0M in Mexico, $11.8M in the UK, $9.1M in Brazil, $7.8M in Russia & $7.6M in Australia.

Universal’s Despicable Me 3 placed in second this weekend with an estimated $34.00 M. Despicable Me 3 declined 53.1 percent from last weekend, which represented a respectable second weekend hold given the added presence of Spider-Man: Homecoming in the marketplace. In comparison, 2013’s Despicable Me 3 declined 47.4 percent in its second weekend to gross $43.89 M, while 2015’s Minions fell 57.4 percent to take in $49.27 M. Despicable Me 3 has grossed $149.19 M through ten days. While the film is running below its lofty expectations and 30.9 percent behind the $215.77 M ten-day take of Minions, Despicable Me 3 continues to perform well with its relatively modest production budget for a computer animated film in mind.

Despicable Me 3 remained strong internationally this weekend with $139.0 M from 60 territories. That brings the film’s international total to an impressive $298.4M and current worldwide haul to $447.6M. This weekend’s international performance included debuts of $66.0 M in China, $9.1 M in France and $8.5 M in Germany.

Sony had more good news this weekend, as Baby Driver held up nicely in its second weekend with an estimated $12.75 M to place in third. Baby Driver slowed just 38.0 percent from its opening weekend performance. Baby Driver continues to outpace expectations with a twelve-day start of $56.88 M. That already gives the film a current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 2.77 to 1. Baby Driver is running nearly on par with the $58.08 M twelve-day take of 2013’s This Is the End, which declined a similar 35.9 percent in its second weekend to gross $13.29 M. With the aid of strong critical reviews and strong word of mouth, Baby Driver is highly likely to continue to hold up well going forward.

Warner’s Wonder Woman also held up very nicely this weekend with an estimated fourth place take of $10.14 M. Wonder Woman declined just 35.5 percent from last weekend in the face of new direct competition from Spider-Man: Homecoming this weekend. The feat was similar to last year’s Deadpool declining 38.9 percent in its seventh weekend against the debut of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. With a massive 38-day total of $368.79 M, Wonder Woman has now passed the mentioned Deadpool, as well as last year’s The Jungle Book, 2013’s Despicable Me 3 and last year’s The Secret Life of Pets to move into 34th place on the all-time unadjusted domestic list. Before long, Wonder Woman will pass by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (which has a current total gross of $385.55 M) to become the highest grossing release of this summer.

Paramount’s Transformers: The Last Knight and Disney’s Cars 3 claimed fifth and sixth place with respective weekend estimates of $6.30 M and $5.64 M. Transformers: The Last Knight was down a sharp 62.7 percent from last weekend, while Cars 3 was able to stabilize this weekend with a solid decline of 41.8 percent. Respective total grosses stand at a softer than expected $133.73 M in 24 days for Cars 3 and at an underwhelming $118.92 M 19 days for Transformers: The Last Knight. In comparison to their previous installments, Cars 3 is running 19.1 percent behind the $165.39 M 24-day take of 2011’s Cars 2 and Transformers: The Last Knight is running 44.3 percent behind the $213.44 M 19-day total of 2014’s Transformers: Age of Extinction.

On the platform front, Lionsgate’s The Big Sick continued to impress with an estimated $3.65 M from 326 locations. That gave The Big Sick a strong per-location average of $11,196 for the frame and ranked the film in eighth place among all films this weekend. The Big Sick has grossed a promising $6.92 M through 17 days of platform release. The Big Sick is set to expand into wide release this coming Friday.
