Weekend Actuals Update: |
With actuals now in, Paramount’s Transformers: The Last Knight finished slightly below Sunday’s estimate with a three-day take of $44.680 M. That brings the film’s five-day start to $68.476 M. |
Warner’s Wonder Woman ended up winning the battle for second place this weekend with $24.906 M, while Disney’s Cars 3 had to settle for third with $24.074 M. |
On the platform front, Lionsgate’s The Big Sick started out with $422 K from 5 locations for a massive per-location average of $84,315, while Focus’ The Beguiled launched with $229 K from 4 locations for a healthy per-location average of $57,323. |
Other weekend actuals for the frame include: 47 Meters Down ($7.088 M), The Mummy ($6.060 M), All Eyez on Me ($5.807 M), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
($5.396 M), Rough Night ($4.703 M) and Captain Underpants ($4.284 M). |
Weekend Estimates Update: |
Paramount’s Transformers: The Last Knight debuted in first place this weekend with an estimated $45.30 M. That brings the five-day start for the fifth installment of the Transformers
franchise to $69.10 M. Transformers: The Last Knight opened on the low end of its scaled back expectations and delivered the softest debut ever for the Transformers franchise by a wide margin. The five-day
start for Transformers: The Last Knight was 42.8 percent below the $120.95 M five-day take of 2014’s Transformers: Age of Extinction (which opened on a Friday) and 57.5 percent softer than the $162.62 M
five-day launch of 2011’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon (which opened on a Wednesday). Transformers: The Last Knight did open 62.7 percent ahead of the $42.47 M five-day start of 2015’s Terminator Genisys
(which was also the fifth installment of its franchise). |
Transformers: The Last Knight took in $13.80 M on Friday (which represented a 69.6 percent increase over Thursday), increased 27.0 percent on Saturday to gross $17.53 M and is estimated to
decline 20.3 percent on Sunday to claim $13.97 M. Transformers: The Last Knight has gone over very poorly with critics. The film currently has a score of just 3.954 on our LoveHate Rate aggregate measurement of
critical and online ratings. Transformers: The Last Knight does appear to be going better with audiences, as the film received a solid B+ rating on CinemaScore, though that does tie 2009’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
for the lowest CinemaScore received by a film in the Transformers franchise. |
There is currently a tie for second place this weekend between Warner’s Wonder Woman and Disney’s Cars 3. Actuals for Sunday will break the tie, though Wonder Woman did have the
slight edge through the end of Saturday with $17.425 M; compared to $16.867 M for Cars 3 through the end of Saturday. |
Warner’s Wonder Woman grossed an estimated $25.18 M this weekend. Wonder Woman continued to display strong holding power, as the film declined 39.0 percent from last weekend
(when the film was still playing on IMAX screens). Wonder Woman surpassed the $300 M domestic mark this weekend, making it the third release of 2017 so far to do so (along with Disney’s Beauty and the Beast & Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2).
Wonder Woman has grossed a massive $318.38 M through 24 days of release and is now just $6.72 M away from the $325.10 M final gross of last year’s Suicide Squad and $11.98 M away from the $330.36 M final gross
of last year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Wonder Woman registered the tenth largest unadjusted fourth weekend gross of all-time. |
Disney’s Cars 3 also grossed an estimated $25.18 M this weekend. Cars 3 was down a sizable 53.1 percent from its opening weekend performance. Cars 3 is on the verge of
surpassing the $100 M domestic mark with a ten-day launch of $99.88 M. The film is running 5.6 percent ahead of the $94.60 M ten-day take of 2014’s How to Train Your Dragon 2 (which fell 50.0 percent in its second weekend to gross $24.72 M)
and 14.8 percent behind the $117.20 M ten-day gross of 2011’s Cars 2 (which slid 60.3 percent in its second weekend to gross $26.27M). Cars 3 will be facing major new competition for family audiences next
weekend when Universal’s Despicable Me 3 enters the marketplace. |
After a surprisingly strong debut last weekend, Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures’ 47 Meters Down continued to surprise this weekend with an estimated fourth place take of $7.44 M.
47 Meters Down declined just 33.6 percent from last weekend, which represented a very strong second weekend hold. In comparison, last year’s The Shallows fell 47.8 percent in its second weekend to gross
$8.78 M. 47 Meters Down has grossed a much stronger than expected $24.26 M in ten days. That places the film a respectable 24.3 percent behind the $35.03 M ten-day gross of The Shallows. |
It’s a very tight race for fifth place this weekend between Lionsgate’s All Eyez on Me and Universal’s The Mummy. All Eyez on Me currently has the slight edge with an estimated
$5.85 M, while The Mummy follows closely behind with an estimated $5.84 M. Neither film held up well this weekend; as All Eyez on Me tumbled 77.9 percent from its opening weekend take and The Mummy fell
59.8 percent from last weekend (when the film was still playing on IMAX screens). Respective total grosses stand at a solid $38.64 M for All Eyez on Me in ten days and at a lackluster $68.52 M for The Mummy in 17 days. |
On the platform front, Lionsgate’s The Big Sick and Focus’ The Beguiled were both off to strong starts this weekend. The Big Sick grossed an estimated $435 K from 5 locations in
New York and Los Angeles, for a massive per-location average of $87,000. The Beguiled grossed an estimated $241 K from 4 location in New York and Los Angeles, for a healthy per-location average of $60,136. Both
films have gone over well with critics and online users, as respective LoveHate Rates currently stand at an exceptional 8.704 for
The Big Sick and at a very solid 7.469 for The Beguiled. The Beguiled is scheduled to expand into moderate release this coming Friday, while The Big Sick will expand into select cities on Friday
and is scheduled to expand into wide release on July 14. |
