Weekend Box Office Report
June 16 - June 18, 2017

By Daniel Garris

Weekend Actuals Update:

With actuals now in, Disney’s Cars 3 and Warner’s Wonder Woman both finished slightly higher than yesterday’s studio estimates. Cars 3 debuted with $53.689 M, while Wonder Woman decreased just 29.5 percent to gross $41.269 M.

Other weekend actuals for the frame include: All Eyez on Me ($26.435 M), The Mummy ($14.511 M), 47 Meters Down ($11.206 M), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales ($8.964 M), Rough Night ($8.004 M), Captain Underpants ($7.182 M) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($5.072 M).

Weekend Estimates Update:

Disney’s Cars 3 led the way at the box office this weekend with an estimated debut of $53.55 M. Cars 3 did open a bit below expectations, which had tended to range from $55 M to $65 M heading into the weekend. The mixed reception to Cars 2 back in 2011 appears to have ultimately limited some of the potential for Cars 3. Cars 3 debuted 19.0 percent below the $66.14 M start of Cars 2, but did open 8.3 percent ahead of the $49.45 M launch of 2014’s How to Train Your Dragon 2. Cars 3 registered the ninth largest unadjusted Father’s Day weekend debut on record.

Cars 3 started out with $19.50 M on Friday (which included an estimated $2.80 M from Thursday evening shows that began at 7PM), slowed 6.7 percent on Saturday to take in $18.20 M and is estimated to decline 12.9 percent on Father’s Day to gross $53.55 M. Thus far Cars 3 has been received better than Cars 2 was. Cars 3 currently has a score of 7.105 on our LoveHate Rate aggregate measurement of critical and online ratings, which compares very favorably to the 5.342 LoveHate Rate for Cars 2. Furthermore, Cars 3 received a strong A rating on CinemaScore, which was stronger than the A- rating received by Cars 2. While the stronger reception to Cars 3 is a good early sign for the film going forward, Cars 3 will be facing major competition for family audiences in the near future when Universal’s Despicable Me 3 enters the marketplace on June 30.

Internationally, Cars 3 grossed $21.3 M from 23 select territories. Grosses in key markets included $5.9 M in Mexico and $4.8 M in Russia. Cars 3 will open in Australia next weekend and in other international territories throughout the rest of the summer.

Warner’s Wonder Woman continued to impress with an estimated second place take of $40.78 M. On the heels of last weekend’s strong second weekend hold, Wonder Woman held up very well once again this weekend, as the film declined by just 30.3 percent. Exceptional word of mouth and the Father’s Day holiday both aided the film’s hold this weekend. Wonder Woman registered the eleventh largest unadjusted third weekend gross of all-time. Wonder Woman has grossed $274.60 M in 17 days, which already gives the film a total gross to opening weekend ratio of 2.66 to 1. The film is running 23.3 percent ahead of the $222.66 M 17-day gross of 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy and 10.5 percent ahead of the $248.58 M 17-day take of 2013’s Man of Steel. Wonder Woman will be zooming past the $291.05 M final gross of Man of Steel in the very near future.

Internationally, Wonder Woman grossed $39.5 M this weekend. That brings the film’s international total to $297.2 M and global total to a massive $571.8 M.

Lionsgate’s All Eyez on Me was off to a strong third place start with an estimated $27.05 M. The Tupac Shakur biopic exceeded expectations, which had tended to range from $17 M to $24 M. Without adjusting for ticket price inflation, All Eyez on Me opened 32.0 percent stronger than the $20.50 M three-day start of 2009’s Notorious. Much like Notorious, it appears as though All Eyez on Me will be very front-loaded going forward, as the film was quite front-loaded towards Friday this weekend.

All Eyez on Me started out with $12.85 M on Friday (which included an estimated $3.10M from Thursday night shows that began at 7PM), dropped a concerning 40.3 percent on Saturday to gross $7.67 M and is estimated to decline 14.9 percent on Sunday to gross $6.53 M. All Eyes on Me has been received poorly by critics and has a current LoveHate Rate of just 5.058. However, All Eyez on Me looks to be going over much better with audiences, as the film received a healthy A- rating on CinemaScore.

Universal’s The Mummy placed in fourth this weekend with an estimated $13.92 M. While The Mummy was down a sizable 56.1 percent this weekend, the film was able to avoid a second weekend collapse. The Mummy has grossed $56.53 M in ten days, which is on the low end of the film’s scaled back expectations. The Mummy is running an underwhelming 20.4 percent behind the $71.05 M ten-day take of 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

The Mummy continued to perform far stronger internationally, as the film grossed $53.0 M overseas this weekend. That brings the film’s international total to $239.1 M and current global haul to $295.6 M. Key international total to date include $81.4 M in China, $24.1 M in Korea, $13.6 M in Russia, $9.3 M in Brazil and $9.3 M in Mexico.

Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures’ 47 Meters Down was off to a very nice fifth place start with an estimated $11.50M. 47 Meters Down surprised in a big way this weekend, as the film’s modest expectations had tended to range from just $4 M to $6 M. The film earned a very solid $5,066 per-location average for the frame from 2,270 locations. 47 Meters Down started out 31.5 percent below the $16.80 M launch of last year’s The Shallows, but hadn’t been expected to reach the opening weekend heights of that film.

47 Meters Down started out with $4.50 M on Friday (which included an estimated $735K from Thursday evening screenings that began at 7PM), was down 11.1 percent on Saturday to take in $4.00 M and is estimated to decrease 25.0 percent on Sunday to gross $3.00 M. 47 Meters Down has received a lukewarm reception from critics and audiences. The film has a current LoveHate Rate of 5.638 and received a C rating on CinemaScore. The next wide release for young distributor Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures is Friend Request, which is currently scheduled for September 22.

Meanwhile, Sony’s Rough Night debuted in seventh place with a disappointing $8.04 M. Rough Night failed to live up to its opening weekend expectations, which had tended to range from $10 M to $17 M. The film represents the second soft performer for Scarlett Johansson this year, as it joins Ghost in the Shell, which opened with $18.68 M. However, it should be noted that Rough Night was far less expensive than Ghost in the Shell, as the reported production budget for Rough Night is a modest $20 M. Rough Night appears to have had its potential limited by the stronger than expected performances of both All Eyez on Me and 47 Meters Down, as well as the exceptional hold of Wonder Woman this weekend.

Rough Night began with $3.36 M on Friday (which included an estimated $700 K from Thursday night shows that began at 7 PM), declined 16.4 percent on Saturday to take in $2.81 M and is estimated to fall 33.5 percent on Sunday to claim $1.87 M. Critical reception to Rough Night has been mixed, as the film has a current LoveHate Rate of 5.227. Rough Night received a modest C+ rating on CinemaScore, which isn’t a promising sign going forward.
