3-Day Weekend Estimates Update: |
Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales debuted in first place this weekend with an estimated three-day take of $62.18 M. The four-day studio estimate for
Dead Men Tell No Tales currently stands at $76.63 M. The film opened towards the lower end of scaled back expectations, which had tended to range from $75 M - $85 M for the four-day frame. The three-day start for
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales was 31.0 percent below the $90.15 M three-day start of 2011’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, though Dead Men Tell No Tales hadn’t been
expected to match the opening weekend performance of On Stranger Tides. The four-day estimate for Dead Men Tell No Tales is 22.0 percent below the $98.30 M four-day take of On Stranger Tides.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales registered the eleventh largest unadjusted four-day Memorial Day weekend debut of all-time (just behind the $79.18 M four-day start of last year’s X-Men: Apocalypse). |
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales started out with $23.40 M on Friday (which included an estimated $5.5 M from Thursday night screenings that began at 7 PM), decreased 13.3 percent
on Saturday to take in $20.28 M and is estimated to decline 8.8 percent on Sunday to gross $18.50 M. Dead Men Tell No Tales has been received poorly by critics, but is going over better with online users. The film
currently has a rating of 5.702 on our LoveHate Rate aggregate measurement. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales looks to
be going over significantly better with its target audience, as it received a healthy A- rating on CinemaScore. |
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales was more impressive internationally with a launch of $208.4 M from 54 territories. Key international debuts included $67.8 M in China, $18.6 M in
Russia, $11.6 M in Korea, $9.3 M in France, $8.4 M in Germany, $6.9 M in Mexico and $6.3 M in the United Kingdom. |
Fellow Disney release Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 placed in second with an estimated three-day haul of $19.89 M. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 experienced a solid hold this weekend, as
the film was down 42.6 percent from last weekend. The current four-day studio estimate for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is $24.24 M, which represents a 30.1 percent decline from last weekend’s three-day frame. |
The domestic total for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stands at $333.21 M through Sunday, which places the film just past the $333.18 M final domestic gross of 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. The 24-day gross for
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is 32.5 percent ahead of the $251.46 M 24-day take of Guardians of the Galaxy and 9.3 percent behind the $367.41 M 24-day take of Iron Man 3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 grossed $8.6 M
internationally this weekend, which brings the film’s international total to $450.1 M and global haul to $783.3 M. |
Paramount’s Baywatch opened in third place with an estimated three-day weekend gross of $18.10 M. With the addition of its $4.61 M opening day performance on Thursday, the four-day total for
Baywatch stands at a lackluster $22.707 M. The current four-day weekend studio estimate for Baywatch is $22.00 M, which places the film’s five-day start at $26.61 M. That is significantly below already scaled
back expectations, which had tended to range from $35 M - $45 M for the film’s first five days. Baywatch is running a very disappointing 57.1 percent below the $62.05 M five-day launch of The Hangover Part III
over Memorial Day weekend back in 2013. |
Baywatch grossed $5.73 M on Friday, increased 15.2 percent on Saturday to claim $6.60 M and is estimated to decrease 12.6 percent on Sunday to register $5.77 M. While Dwayne Johnson tends to be
critic proof at the box office, poor critical reviews (the film has a current LoveHate Rate of just 4.715) clearly hampered Baywatch
heading into the weekend. However, like Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Baywatch also looks to be going over significantly better with audiences as it earned a solid B+ rating on CinemaScore. |
After debuting in first place last weekend, Fox’s Alien: Covenant was down three spots and a troubling 70.9 percent to land in fourth place with an estimated three-day take of $10.53 M. The current
four-day studio estimate for Alien: Covenant stands at $13.10 M. With a ten-day total of $57.35 M through Sunday, Alien: Covenant is running a disappointing 35.8 percent behind the $89.37 M ten-day take of
2012’s Prometheus (which fell 59.4 percent in its second weekend to gross $20.71 M). This weekend’s hold for Alien: Covenant is obviously a poor sign for the film going forward. |
Warner’s Everything, Everything and Fox’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul experienced significantly stronger second weekend holds with respective estimated fifth and sixth place
three-day grosses of $6.19 M and $4.40 M. Everything, Everything declined 47.3 percent from last weekend, while Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul decreased by 38.3 percent. Respective ten-day grosses stand
at a very solid $21.54 M for Everything, Everything and at an underwhelming $13.58 M for Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul. |
In other box office news, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast surpassed the $500 M domestic mark this weekend. Beauty and the Beast is just the eighth film to ever reach the $500 M milestone
without taking into account ticket price inflation. Beauty and the Beast placed in tenth this weekend with an estimated three-day take of $1.56 M and has grossed a massive $500.56 M to date through Sunday. |
