Weekend Actuals Update: |
With actuals now in, Fox’s Alien: Covenant was able to hold onto first place with a debut of $36.161 M. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 placed in a very close second with $34.654 M, as it
trailed Alien: Covenant by $1.507 M for the frame. |
Other weekend actuals for the frame include: Everything, Everything ($11.727 M), Snatched ($7.833 M), King Arthur: Legend of the Sword ($7.152 M) and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul ($7.126 M). |
Weekend Estimates Update: |
In a close race for first place this weekend; Fox’s Alien: Covenant currently has the slight edge over Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Alien: Covenant debuted with an estimated
$36.00 M. That gives Alien: Covenant an estimated $938 K lead over Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 for the frame. Alien: Covenant opened on the lower end of expectations, which tended to range anywhere
from $35 M to $50 M heading into the weekend. The film opened an underwhelming 29.5 percent below the $51.05 M start of 2012’s Prometheus. The mixed reaction to Prometheus looks to have ultimately limited the
potential a bit for Alien: Covenant. Instead, Alien: Covenant opened more along the lines of the $38.29 M launch of 2004’s Alien vs Predator (without taking into account ticket price inflation). |
Alien: Covenant started out with $15.35 M on Friday (which included an estimated $4.2 M from Thursday night shows that began at 7 PM), decreased a concerning 21.7 percent on Saturday to take in
$12.03 M and is estimated to decline 28.3 percent on Sunday to gross $8.63 M. The film was clearly front-loaded this weekend, which usually isn’t a good early sign. Critical and online reaction to Alien: Covenant has
been lukewarm, as the film currently has a score of 6.989 on our LoveHate Rate aggregate measurement. Alien: Covenant received a respectable B rating
on CinemaScore. |
Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 placed in a very close second with an estimated $35.06 M. That represented the 18th largest unadjusted third weekend gross of all-time.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was down 46.3 percent from last weekend, which represented a solid third weekend decline for a comic book sequel. In comparison, 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy decreased 40.4 percent
in its third weekend to gross $25.12 M, while 2013’s Iron Man 3 fell 50.7 percent to take in $35.77 M. |
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is projected to pass the $300 M domestic mark today on the film’s 17th day of release. The 17-day total for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stands at a
strong $301.80 M. The film is running 35.5 percent ahead of the $222.66 M 17-day gross of Guardians of the Galaxy and 10.6 percent behind the $337.66 M 17-day take of Iron Man 3. Before much longer,
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will zoom past the $333.18 M final domestic gross of Guardians of the Galaxy. |
Warner’s Everything, Everything debuted in third place with an estimated $12.00 M. Everything, Everything opened on the very high end of expectations and performed nicely with its low $10 M production budget
in mind. Everything, Everything started out 23.5 percent below the $15.68 M start of 2014’s If I Stay (though it had not been expected to duplicate that performance) and just 5.1 percent below the $12.65 M launch of
2015’s Paper Towns. |
Everything, Everything grossed $4.74 M on Friday (which included an estimated $525 K from Thursday evening shows that began at 5 PM), slowed just 7.4 percent on Saturday to take in $4.39 M and is
estimated to decrease 34.6 percent on Sunday to claim $2.87 M. Critical and online reaction to Everything, Everything hasn’t been great, as the film currently has a modest LoveHate Rate of 5.934. However, the
film appears to be going over far better with audiences, as it received a promising A- rating on CinemaScore. |
Fox’s Snatched claimed fourth place with an estimated $7.60 M. On the heels of last weekend’s solid start, Snatched was down two spots and a sharp 61.1 percent this weekend. Mixed word
of mouth and last weekend being inflated by a strong Mother’s Day performance appear to have both taken a toll on Snatched this weekend. Snatched has grossed $32.78 M through ten days of release. The film is
running 39.8 percent ahead of the $23.45 M ten-day take of 2015’s Hot Pursuit and 46.7 percent behind the $61.53 M ten-day start of 2015’s Trainwreck. |
Fellow Fox release Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul rounded out the weekend’s top five with an estimated debut of $7.20 M. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul opened below its already
modest expectations and started out a lackluster 50.8 percent softer than the $14.62 M launch of 2012’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days. At the end of the day, there just wasn’t much demand for another
Diary of a Wimpy Kid film after a 5 year wait and the film’s poor critical reviews (The Long Haul currently has a very soft LoveHate Rate of 3.125) didn’t
help matters either. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul does appear to be going over significantly better with audiences than with critics, as it received a respectable B rating on CinemaScore. |
Warner’s King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword was down three spots and a sizable 55.4 percent from last weekend to place in sixth with an estimated $6.85 M. The film has grossed a disappointing
$27.20 M in ten days and continues to perform very poorly with its expensive price tag in mind. King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword is running slightly ahead of the $26.53 M ten-day take of director Guy Ritchie’s last film, 2015’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E., which
declined 45.5 percent in its second weekend to gross $7.32 M. |
