Weekend Actuals Update: |
With actuals now in, Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 came in a bit higher than Sunday’s studio estimate with an opening weekend take of $146.510 M. That represents the 17th largest
unadjusted opening weekend gross of all-time. |
Other weekend actuals for the frame include: The Fate of the Furious ($8.577 M), The Boss Baby ($5.977 M), How to Be a Latin Lover ($5.145 M), Beauty and the Beast ($5.088 M), The Circle ($3.959 M) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion ($3.394 M). |
Weekend Estimates Update: |
Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 successfully kicked off the summer movie-going season this weekend with an estimated debut of $145.05 M. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opened in
line with its wide-ranging expectations, which had tended to range anywhere from $130 M to $170 M. The film opened an impressive 53.8 percent ahead of the $94.32 M start of 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy and 19.0
percent behind the $179.14 M launch of last year’s Captain America: Civil War. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 registered the sixth largest May debut of all-time and the eighth largest opening ever for Disney. The
film’s debut ranks as the 17th largest unadjusted opening weekend of all-time. |
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 started out with $56.26 M on Friday (which included an estimated $17.0 M from Thursday evening previews that began at 7 PM), declined just 9.1 percent on Saturday to
gross $51.11 M and is estimated to decrease 26.3 percent on Sunday to gross $37.68 M. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 held up very nicely on Saturday for a high-profile comic book adaptation. That is likely an early
indicator of strong early mouth for the film and also suggests that Baby Groot has helped increase the film’s appeal with family audiences. According to Disney, family audiences represented 19 percent of the film’s overall
audience this weekend. Cinco de Mayo may have deflated the film’s Friday performance somewhat as well. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 grossed an estimated $13.0 M from IMAX locations this weekend. |
Critical reviews and internet reaction to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 have been healthy. The film currently has an 8.225 score on our LoveHate Rate aggregate
measurement of online critical metrics, which is the sixth highest score of 2017 to date among qualifying films. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 appears to be going over even better with audiences. In addition to the
film’s strong Saturday hold, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 received a strong A rating on CinemaScore. The original Guardians of the Galaxy displayed very strong holding power after opening weekend and early
signs are pointing towards Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 holding up well for a comic book sequel. |
Internationally, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Vol. 2 grossed an estimated $123.8 M from 55 territories. That brings the film’s international total to $282.6 M and global haul to $427.6 M. International
debuts for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 this weekend included $48.0 M in China, $13.3 M in Korea and $11.6 M in Russia. Total grosses to date in other key markets include $35.7 M in the United Kingdom, $18.4 M in
Germany, $17.2 M in Australia, $16.1 M in France, $14.8 M in Mexico and $14.4 M in Brazil. |
After leading the box office for the past three weekends, Universal’s The Fate of the Furious fell to a distant second place this weekend with an estimated $8.53 M. The Fate of the Furious was
down 57.2 percent from last weekend. While that represented a sharp decline, it wasn’t quite as steep as the 62.7 percent Furious 7 fell when Avengers: Age of Ultron debuted back in 2015. The Fate of the Furious
passed the $200 M domestic mark this weekend, making it the third release of 2017 to do so thus far. The film has grossed $207.14 M in 24 days, which places it 5.7 percent behind the $219.72 M 24-day take of 2013’s
Fast & Furious 6. |
Internationally, The Fate of the Furious took in an estimated $30.1 M this weekend from 66 territories. The Fate of the Furious has now grossed $951.2 M internationally and $1.158 B globally. Key
international totals to date include a massive $381.8 M in China, $37.3 M in Brazil, $35.7 M in the United Kingdom, $35.3 M in Mexico, $30.1 M in Germany, $28.4 M in Russia, $26.3 M in Korea, $26.0 M in France and $23.1 M in Japan. |
Fox and DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby was up one spot from last weekend to move into third with an estimated $6.18 M. The Boss Baby was down 34.1 percent this weekend, which
represented a very solid hold, especially given the added presence of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in the marketplace. The Boss Baby has grossed a stronger than expected $156.74 M in 38 days. The film is
running 17.1 percent ahead of the $133.88 M 38-day gross of last year’s Kung Fu Panda 3 and a very slim 1.0 percent behind the $158.30 M 38-day take of 2015’s Home. |
Lionsgate and Pantelion’s How to Be a Latin Lover placed in fourth with an estimated $5.25 M. On the heels of last weekend’s stronger than expected start, How to Be a Latin Lover was down
a surprisingly sharp 57.2 percent this weekend. Cinco de Mayo falling on Friday and the Alvarez vs Chavez Jr. boxing match on Saturday appear to have contributed to the film’s second weekend decline. While it isn’t holding
up anywhere near as well as 2013’s Instructions Not Included, How to Be a Latin Lover has still grossed a healthy $20.65 M in ten days. That places the film just ahead of the $20.36 M ten-day take of
Instructions Not Included (which increased 3.9 percent in its second weekend to gross $8.15 M). |
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast rounded out the weekend’s top five with an estimated $4.94 M. Beauty and the Beast decreased just 27.6 percent from last weekend. The film received an added
boost this weekend from playing in drive-in double features with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Beauty and the Beast has grossed a massive $487.59 M in 52 days. This weekend saw Beauty and the Beast pass by
the $486.30 M total gross of last year’s Finding Dory to move into eighth place on the all-time unadjusted box office list. |
In other box office news, Great India Films’ Baahubali 2: The Conclusion placed in seventh with an estimated $3.24 M from a moderate 418 locations. Baahubali 2 was down a very sharp 68.9 percent
from last weekend’s debut. However, the large second weekend decline wasn’t a surprise given that the opening weekend gross for Baahubali 2 included sizable Thursday previews and that the film was no longer playing in
IMAX locations this weekend. With a ten-day gross of $16.33 M, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion is already the highest grossing Indian film ever in North America, as the film has surpassed the $12.39 M total gross of
previous record holder; last year’s Dangal. |
