Weekend Box Office Report
April 7 - April 9, 2017

By Daniel Garris

Weekend Actuals Update:

With actuals now in, the gap this weekend between Fox’s The Boss Baby and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast increased from Sunday’s studio estimates. The Boss Baby was the weekend’s top film with $26.363 M, while Beauty and the Beast followed in second with $23.653 M. Respective weekend percentage declines were 47.5 percent for The Boss Baby and a similar 47.9 percent for Beauty and the Beast.

Meanwhile, Sony’s Smurfs: The Lost Village and Warner’s Going in Style both came down a bit from their respective estimates. Smurfs: The Lost Village debuted in third with $13.210 M and Going in Style opened in fourth with $11.932 M.

Other weekend actuals for the frame include: Ghost in the Shell ($7.306 M), Power Rangers ($6.199 M) and The Case for Christ ($3.968 M).

Weekend Estimates Update:

Fox and DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby grossed an estimated $26.30 M this weekend to lead the box office for a second consecutive frame. The Boss Baby declined a respectable 47.6 percent from its stronger than expected opening weekend performance. In comparison, 2015’s Home fell a similar 48.2 percent in its second weekend to gross $27.01 M. The Boss Baby has grossed $89.37 M through ten days of release. That places the film 6.2 percent behind the $95.24 M ten-day take of Home. With a lack of high-profile family films entering the marketplace throughout the rest of April, The Boss Baby is likely to hold up significantly better going forward.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast once again placed in a very close second with an estimated $25.02 M. Beauty and the Beast registered the tenth largest unadjusted fourth weekend gross ever. Beauty and the Beast was down 44.9 percent from last weekend and received an added boost this weekend from the release of the Sing-Along version of the film. With a massive 24-day gross of $432.32 M, Beauty and the Beast now ranks in 15th place on the all-time unadjusted domestic chart. The film is running 50.3 percent ahead of the $287.60 M 24-day gross of last year’s The Jungle Book (which fell 44.0 percent in its fourth weekend to gross $24.49 M).

Turning towards the weekend’s new releases, Sony’s Smurfs: The Lost Village debuted in third with an estimated $14.02 M. The film opened on the very low-end of already scaled back expectations. Animated films typically perform well during the pre-Easter frame, but the break-out performance of The Boss Baby and an overall lack of pre-release interest were too much for Smurfs: The Lost Village to overcome. The opening weekend performance of Smurfs: The Lost Village was 20.1 percent below the $17.55 M opening weekend take of 2013’s The Smurfs 2 (a figure which was deflated by that film opening on a Wednesday).

Critical and online reaction to Smurfs: The Lost Village has been lackluster; the film has a current 5.449 rating on our LoveHate Rate aggregate measurement of online critical metrics. However, the film appears to be going over far better with its target audience, as it received a strong A rating on CinemaScore. As is the case for The Boss Baby, Smurfs: The Lost Village will have a good chance of holding up well throughout the rest of April.

Warner’s Going in Style opened in fourth place with an estimated $12.50 M. Going in Style was able to outpace its modest consensus expectations and likely received a bit of a boost from being a film aimed at older moviegoers in a marketplace led by family fare at the moment. Going in Style did open 23.5 percent below the $16.33 M start of 2013’s Last Vegas, but wasn’t expected to reach the same heights as Last Vegas. Like Last Vegas, Going in Style will hope to hold up well, in part from help from its target older audience, which typically doesn’t rush out on opening weekend. Online and critical reaction to Going in Style has been mixed (the film has a current LoveHate Rate of 5.760), but the film did receive an encouraging B+ rating on CinemaScore.

Meanwhile, Paramount and DreamWorks’ Ghost in the Shell took fifth place this weekend with an estimated $7.35 M, while Lionsgate’s Saban’s Power Rangers followed in sixth with an estimated $6.22 M. Ghost in the Shell was down a very sharp 60.6 percent from last weekend’s debut. Power Rangers held up slightly better, but was still down a sharp 56.2 percent. Respective total grosses stand at a disappointing $31.57 M in ten days for Ghost in the Shell and at a solid $75.11 M in 17 days for Power Rangers. With Universal’s highly anticipated The Fate of the Furious entering the marketplace this coming Friday, Ghost in the Shell and Power Rangers are both highly likely to continue to fall off quickly next weekend.

In other box office news, Pure Flix’s The Case for Christ was off to a solid start with an estimated $3.90 M. The Case for Christ earned a per-location average of $3,322 this weekend while playing in a semi-wide 1,174 locations. The film opened in line with expectations and 8.6 percent ahead of the $3.59 M start of 2015’s Do You Believe? With an exceptional A+ rating on CinemaScore and Easter falling next Sunday, The Case for Christ will likely hold up well next weekend.
