Disney and 20th Century's Avatar: Fire and Ash will look to lead the domestic box office for a third consecutive weekend over the New Year's weekend holiday frame. Avatar: Fire and Ash is coming off of a strong second weekend hold, which saw the film decline 29.2 percent to gross $63.09 million. Last weekend's hold was inflated by Christmas weekend and with the way the calendar lines up this year, an event film like Avatar: Fire and Ash should experience a larger decline this weekend than it did last weekend. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Avatar: Fire and Ash will decline a solid 39.0 percent from last weekend to take in $38.5 million. That would likely move the film just past the $300 million domestic mark.
Fellow Disney blockbuster Zootopia 2 is coming off of a very strong Christmas weekend hold, which saw the computer animated sequel increase 33.9 percent to place in second with $19.87 million. Over the holiday midweek, Zootopia 2 has continued to remain a strong performer, which points towards the film having another strong hold this weekend. Zootopia 2 could decline just 22.0 percent this weekend to hold steady in second place with $15.5 million. Earlier this week Zootopia 2 passed the $1.45 billion global total gross of 2019's Frozen II to become the highest grossing Walt Disney Animation Studios film ever globally.
Last weekend A24's Marty Supreme exceeded already rising expectations with a third place take of $17.72 million upon expanding to wide release, while Lionsgate's The Housemaid declined just 19.5 percent in its second weekend to follow in fourth place with $15.31 million. Both buzz heavy films look to be going over well with audiences, as in addition to experiencing strong daily holds, Marty Supreme received a B+ rating on CinemaScore and The Housemaid received a B rating (both films are the type of films that would typically receive a lower rating on CinemaScore). It will likely be a close race between the two films for third place this weekend. While Marty Supreme has had the slight edge during the midweek this week, The Housemaid is likely to be more weekend-heavy than Marty Supreme in general, which could give The Housemaid the slight edge over the weekend. Look for The Housemaid to decrease only 15.1 percent from last weekend to gross $13.0 million and for Marty Supreme to have a very promising second weekend hold by declining 27.8 percent to gross a similar $12.8 million.
Last weekend Sony's Anaconda wasn't too far away from Marty Supreme and The Housemaid in the rankings with a three-day opening weekend fifth place gross of $14.50 million. However, in general, midweek business for Anaconda has been less impressive this week than it has been for both Marty Supreme and The Housemaid. With that in mind, Anaconda will likely experience a larger percentage decline than those films this weekend. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Anaconda will decrease a still solid 36.6 percent to round out this weekend's top five with $9.2 million.
Angel Studios' David and Paramount's The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants took sixth and seventh place last weekend with respective grosses of $12.53 million and $11.11 million. The two computer animated films are likely to remain in sixth and seventh place this weekend. While The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants should continue to close the gap between it and David in the current rankings, it may not be able to quite catch David this weekend due in part to The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants experiencing the slightly larger location loss between the two films this weekend. David could decrease 38.6 percent to gross $7.7 million this weekend and The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants could slow by 32.5 percent to take in a similar $7.5 million for the frame.
