Warner Bros.'s Superman is set to continue to soar at the domestic box office this weekend on the heels of last weekend's strong first place start of $125.02 million. The first theatrical entry in the new DC Universe (DCU) has gone over well with critics and audiences alike, as Superman received a healthy A- rating on CinemaScore. Initial daily percentage holds for the film have been very encouraging thus far and on top of that Superman will likely receive a second weekend boost this weekend thanks in part to a number of different factors which include holding onto IMAX screens this weekend (especially since the film has been performing very well in IMAX), not much being expected of this weekend's three new wide releases and this weekend serving as a chance for moviegoers to catch Superman before Disney's highly anticipated The Fantastic Four: First Steps enters the marketplace next weekend. In addition, as the first entry in a new cinematic universe, Superman could have some relative built-in back-loading for a high profile comic book based film. Back in May of 2023, the James Gunn directed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 declined 47.6 percent in its second weekend to gross $62.01 million (though it should be noted that was also Mother's Day weekend). Given all of the encouraging factors for Superman, the film could have a second weekend percentage hold not too far off from that of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Look for Superman to decline a very respectable 51.6 percent this weekend to gross $60.5 million.
Last weekend Universal's Jurassic World Rebirth declined 56.2 percent to take second place with a second weekend haul of $40.33 million. With the opening weekend performance of Superman now out of the way, Jurassic World Rebirth should start to stabilize this weekend. At the same time, Jurassic World Rebirth is still early enough in its run where it will continue to experience additional front-loading, especially since the film appears to have gone over just good, but not great, with audiences. Jurassic World Rebirth could decrease 46.7 percent this weekend to place in second with $21.5 million.
The weekend's top new release is likely to be Sony's I Know What You Did Last Summer. The R-rated horror film represents the third theatrical installment in the I Know What You Did Last Summer series (and fourth overall). The new I Know What You Did Last Summer was directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, stars Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers, Sarah Pidgeon and also features the return of series stars Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt. I Know What You Did Last Summer is playing in 3,206 locations this weekend and has Thursday preview shows beginning early at 2PM. On the average, critical reviews for I Know What You Did Last Summer have been negative. Fans of the original films from the 1990s should help I Know What You Did Last Summer have a presence at the box office this weekend, but at the same time there doesn't appear to be enough demand for the film to have any type of break-out performance this weekend. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that I Know What You Did Last Summer will debut in third place this weekend with $16.0 million.
Also opening in wide release this weekend is Paramount's Smurfs. The latest computer animated film featuring The Smurfs was directed by Chris Miller and features an ensemble vocal cast that includes Rihanna, James Corden, Nick Offerman, JP Karliak, Daniel Levy, Kurt Russell and John Goodman (among others). Smurfs will be playing in 3,504 locations this weekend, but isn't having Thursday preview shows. Critical reviews for Smurfs have been very negative. The previous theatrical The Smurfs film, Smurfs: The Lost Village (which was released by Sony) debuted with $13.21 million domestically back in April of 2017. The hope is that Smurfs doesn't fall off to far from the debut of Smurfs: The Lost Village, especially with the relative lack of options for family audiences at the moment (now that Elio and Lilo & Stitch no longer have much of a domestic box office presence). BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Smurfs will open in fourth place this weekend with a so-so $11.5 million.
Meanwhile, A24 is releasing Eddington in 2,111 locations this weekend. The Ari Aster directed neo-western features an impressive cast that includes Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Austin Butler and Emma Stone. Thursday preview shows for Eddington begin at 4PM. Somewhat surprisingly, critical reviews for Eddington have been mixed, though more so positive than negative. Eddington doesn't look to have much mainstream appeal, but fans of Aster and of the film's cast should at least bring in some business for Eddington this weekend. Eddington could debut in sixth place this weekend with $6.5 million (behind Warner Bros. and Apple's F1 The Movie, which could decline a very solid 34.9 percent to place in fifth with $8.5 million).
