Daily Box Office Report
Wednesday, December 26, 2018

By Daniel Garris

Warner’s Aquaman continued to excel at the daily box office on Wednesday with an estimated $16.900 million. Aquaman has now led the daily box office for six consecutive days. On Boxing Day, Aquaman was down 23.4 percent from Tuesday’s inflated Christmas Day performance. With a strong $122.615 million after six days of release, Aquaman continues to perform in line with its lofty expectations. That is just ahead of the $122.350 million six-day start of last year’s Justice League and going forward Aquaman will no doubt hold up significantly better than Justice League did. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a second weekend gross of $52.0 million for Aquaman.

Internationally, Aquaman grossed an estimated $20.0 million on Wednesday. That brings the film’s international total to $473.6 million and current global haul to $596.2 million. Yesterday saw Aquaman debut with $2.7 million in Australia ($3.1 million when including previews from Christmas Day). Current international totals by market for Aquaman include $246.4 million in China, $19.3 million in Brazil, $18.5 million in South Korea, $18.3 million in Mexico, $14.2 million in the United Kingdom, $13.8 million in Indonesia, $13.7 million in Russia, $9.9 million in Taiwan and $9.5 million in France. Aquaman will launch in Italy on New Year’s Day.

Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns continued to build momentum on Wednesday with a second place take of $10.901 million. That represented a slim 4.9 percent decline from Tuesday and a healthy 128.8 percent increase over last Wednesday’s opening day performance. Boxing Day is traditionally a very strong day for family films and that was certainly the case yesterday for Mary Poppins Returns. On the heels of a slower than expected start last week; Mary Poppins Returns has grossed a promising $60.847 million in eight days. In comparison to last year’s Christmas weekend midweek openers, Mary Poppins Returns is running 111.5 percent ahead of the $28.774 million eight-day start of The Greatest Showman and 41.6 percent behind the $104.110 million grossed by Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle after eight days of release. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Mary Poppins Returns will take in $29.0 million in its second weekend.

Paramount’s Bumblebee held steady in third place with $6.271 million. Bumblebee declined 29.4 percent from Tuesday’s strong Christmas Day hold. Bumblebee passed the $40 million domestic mark yesterday and has grossed $40.525 million through six days. That is towards the lower end of expectations, but Bumblebee is likely to display strong holding power throughout its run. Thus far Bumblebee is performing very similar to Pitch Perfect 3, which grossed $40.321 million during its first six days in December of last year. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a second weekend take of $19.0 million for Bumblebee.

Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was up one spot from Tuesday to move into fourth place on Wednesday with an estimated $5.900 million. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was up a healthy 4.7 percent over Tuesday and up 111.9 percent over last Wednesday. The thirteen-day total for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse stands at a very solid $79.625 million. That places the film 29.0 percent behind the $112.213 million thirteen-day take of last year’s The LEGO Batman Movie. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will gross $18.5 million in its third weekend.

Warner’s The Mule was up one place from Tuesday to round out Wednesday’s top five with an estimated $3.510 million. That represented a 28.4 percent decrease from Tuesday and a strong 98.0 percent increase over last Wednesday. The Mule has grossed a solid $45.838 million in thirteen days. The film is running 14.7 percent behind the $53.761 million thirteen-day total of 2012’s Jack Reacher and should continue to make up ground in the comparison going forward. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a third weekend haul of $11.5 million for The Mule.

On the heels of respective solid opening day performances on Christmas, both Sony’s Holmes & Watson and Annapurna’s Vice experienced troubling percentage declines on Wednesday. Holmes & Watson was down 45.5 percent to claim sixth with an estimated $3.500 million, while Vice decreased 40.0 percent to land in seventh with $2.869 million. Vice received a lackluster C+ rating on CinemaScore and Holmes & Watson received a poor D+ rating and it appears that poor word of mouth was already having an effect on both films on Wednesday. Respective two-day starts stand at $9.925 million for Holmes & Watson and at $7.653 million for Vice.
