Universal and Illumination’s Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch led the Veterans Day holiday box office on Monday with a strong $10.666 million. Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch was down 50.4 percent form Sunday and has
led the daily box office for four consecutive days. The Veterans Day holiday provided a big boost to the box office in general on Monday, especially to films with family appeal. The four-day start for Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch
stands at a terrific $78.238 million. That is towards the higher end of expectations and places the film 6.2 percent ahead of the $73.703 million four-day haul of 2012’s Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax. With a relatively modest
production budget for a high-profile computer animated film, Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch represents another strong performer for Illumination. |
Fox’s Bohemian Rhapsody claimed second place with $4.420 million. That represented a 54.2 percent decrease from Sunday and a 0.8 percent increase over last Monday’s performance. Bohemian Rhapsody
continues to exceed expectations with an impressive eleven-day gross of $104.782 million. The film is running 7.4 percent ahead of the $97.539 million grossed by A Star is Born after eleven days of release. |
Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms took third with $1.702 million. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms was down just 47.9 percent from Sunday and up a strong 54.9 percent over last Monday.
The eleven-day total for The Nutcracker and the Four Realms stands at $37.481 million, which places the film an underwhelming 28.4 percent behind the $52.359 million eleven-day take of Disney’s Christopher Robin earlier
this year. |
Paramount’s Overlord followed in fourth place with $1.280 million. Overlord declined 52.6 percent from Sunday’s performance. The four-day start for Overlord stands at $11.482 million, which
is right in line with pre-release expectations. |
Warner’s A Star is Born rounded out the day’s top five with $1.212 million. A Star is Born continues to display terrific holding power, as the film was down 48.6 percent from Sunday and up
20.3 percent over last Monday. A Star is Born has grossed $179.328 million after 39 days of wide release. |
Sony and MGM’s The Girl in the Spider’s Web finished in sixth for the day with $950,262. That represented a 50.7 percent decrease from Sunday. The Girl in the Spider’s Web has grossed a soft
$8.760 million in four days, which is a bit below the film’s already modest expectations. |
