Daily Box Office Report
Wednesday, August 22, 2018

By Daniel Garris

Morning Update:

Warner’s Crazy Rich Asians continued to impress on Wednesday with an estimated first place take of $3.74 million. Crazy Rich Asians has now led the daily box office for eight consecutive days. The film was down 32.3 percent from Tuesday and down only 25.4 percent from last Wednesday’s opening day performance. Yesterday’s hold is made even more impressive given that Crazy Rich Asians wasn’t a daily choice on MoviePass on Wednesday, while it was available on MoviePass the previous Wednesday and this past Tuesday. The film is a daily choice on MoviePass once again today. Crazy Rich Asians has grossed a stronger than expected $48.172 million in eight days and will zoom past the $50 million domestic mark today. The film is running 0.9 percent ahead of the $47.753 million eight-day start of 2011’s The Help (which declined 18.6 percent on its second Wednesday to gross $3.564 million). BoxOfficeReport expects Crazy Rich Asians to hold up extremely well this weekend with a first place second weekend take of $20.0 million.

Fellow Warner Bros. release The Meg held steady in second place with an estimated $1.925 million. The Meg declined 34.6 percent from Tuesday and a respectable 43.6 percent from last Wednesday. The Meg was a daily choice on MoviePass on Wednesday and wasn’t a choice on Tuesday. The thirteen-day total for The Meg stands at a far stronger than expected $90.812 million. That places the film an impressive 29.7 percent ahead of the $70.01 million thirteen-day take of fellow Warner Bros. release Rampage earlier this year. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a third weekend gross of $12.7 million for The Meg.

Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout was up one spot from Tuesday to move into third place on Wednesday with an estimated $1.13 million. That represented a 34.1 percent decrease from Tuesday and a solid 38.4 percent decline from last Wednesday. With a strong 27-day gross of $184.926 million, Mission: Impossible – Fallout is now just $10.116 million away from the $195.042 million final domestic gross of 2015’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Mission: Impossible – Fallout will take in $7.1 million in its fifth weekend.

Additional analysis and full daily grosses for Wednesday’s box office will appear later today.

Afternoon Update:

STXfilms’ Mile 22 was down one spot from Tuesday to land in fourth on Wednesday with $1.074 million. Mile 22 was down a very sharp 45.2 percent from Tuesday’s performance. Likely contributing to the film’s sharp decline yesterday was that Mile 22 wasn’t a MoviePass choice on Wednesday after being a choice on Tuesday. The film is a MoviePass choice again today. Mile 22 has grossed a softer than expected $18.14 million in six days. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a second weekend take of $6.2 million for Mile 22.

Alpha was up one spot from Tuesday to round out Wednesday’s top five with $1.056 million. Alpha was down a solid 30.8 percent from Tuesday. Alpha looks to be benefiting from healthy word of mouth and the film was a MoviePass choice on Wednesday after not being a choice on Tuesday. The six-day start for Alpha stands at a stronger than expected $13.85 million. Given its early holding power so far, BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Alpha will gross $6.0 million in its second weekend.

Disney’s Christopher Robin was down one place from Tuesday to take sixth with $1.040 million. That represented a 34.8 percent decline from Tuesday and a very solid 35.7 percent decline from last Wednesday. Christopher Robin passed the $70 million mark yesterday and has grossed a solid $70.496 million in 20 days thanks in part to strong holding power. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a haul of $6.3 million for Disney’s Christopher Robin in its fourth weekend.
