Daily Box Office Report
Wednesday, March 28, 2018

By Daniel Garris

Warner’s Ready Player One began its run with an estimated $3.75 million from Wednesday night shows that began at 7PM. As is commonplace, last night’s preview grosses will be counted towards Thursday’s opening day performance. Yesterday, BoxOfficeReport predicted an opening weekend take of $43.0 million for Ready Player One and a four-day launch of $56.0 million. Internationally, Ready Player One grossed an estimated $2.9 million on Wednesday from 11 markets (which included South Korea, France and Italy). Ready Player One has grossed $3.2 million to date internationally and opens in a number of additional international markets today (including Australia, Brazil, Mexico, Russia, Spain and the U.K.)

Disney’s Black Panther was up one spot from Tuesday to return to first place on Wednesday with $1.743 million. Black Panther declined 29.1 percent from Tuesday and just 15.1 percent from last Wednesday. Black Panther has grossed a massive $637.377 million in 41 days. The film is currently the fifth highest grossing film of all-time domestically and is now just $14.894 million away from passing 2015’s Jurassic World to move into fourth place on the all-time domestic list. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Black Panther will take in $11.2 million this weekend.

Universal and Legendary’s Pacific Rim Uprising was down one spot and a very sharp 47.1 percent from Tuesday to fall to second on Wednesday with $1.559 million. In addition to natural front-loading, Pacific Rim Uprising took a clear hit yesterday from the added competition from Ready Player One during the evening. Pacific Rim Uprising has grossed $34.786 million in six days. That is towards the higher end of expectations, but is also 29.3 percent behind the $49.168 million six-day launch of 2013’s Pacific Rim. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a second weekend gross of $10.8 million for Pacific Rim Uprising.

Roadside’s I Can Only Imagine held steady in third place with $1.513 million. I Can Only Imagine continues to display strong holding power, as the film was down 29.1 percent from Tuesday and down a slim 9.6 percent from last Wednesday. The thirteen-day total for I Can Only Imagine stands at a significantly stronger than expected $43.156 million. That places the film an impressive 21.5 percent ahead of the $35.522 million thirteen-day gross of last year’s The Shack. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that I Can Only Imagine will gross $10.5 million in its third weekend.

Paramount and MGM’s Sherlock Gnomes remained in fourth with $1.110 million. Sherlock Gnomes decreased 32.9 percent from Tuesday’s performance. Sherlock Gnomes has grossed a softer than expected $14.395 million in six days and is running an underwhelming 52.0 percent behind the $30.006 million six-day start of 2011’s Gnomeo and Juliet. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a second weekend take of $6.7 million for Sherlock Gnomes.

Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time was up one spot from Tuesday to round out Wednesday’s top five with $1.004 million. A Wrinkle in Time has held up nicely during the midweek and was down 27.5 percent from Tuesday and down only 11.4 percent from last Wednesday. The 20-day total for A Wrinkle in Time stands at $77.372 million. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a fourth weekend gross of $4.1 million for A Wrinkle in Time.

In other box office news on Wednesday, Fox Searchlight’s Isle of Dogs moved into eighth place with $701,579 upon receiving its first expansion. Isle of Dogs added 137 locations on Wednesday, which brought the film’s location count to 164. For the day, Isle of Dogs registered an impressive per-location average of $4,278. The six-day platform start for Isle of Dogs stands at a promising $2.622 million.
