Universal and Legendary’s Pacific Rim Uprising grossed $2.166 million on Monday to lead the daily box office for a fourth consecutive day. Pacific Rim Uprising declined 70.0 percent
from Sunday, which represented the day’s sharpest daily percentage decline among wide releases. Pacific Rim Uprising is running towards the higher end of expectations with a four-day start of $30.282 million. That
places the film 26.8 percent behind the $41.342 million four-day launch of 2013’s Pacific Rim, though Pacific Rim Uprising hadn’t been expected to match the box office performance of its predecessor. |
Disney’s Black Panther placed in a close second with $1.820 million. Black Panther was down 63.9 percent from Sunday and down only 16.9 percent from last Monday. It should be noted
that yesterday’s grosses in general received an added boost from Holy Week. Black Panther has grossed a massive $633.177 million in 39 days. Black Panther is currently the fifth highest grossing film of
all-time domestically and is now just $19.093 million away from passing 2015’s Jurassic World to move into fourth place on the all-time domestic list. |
Roadside’s I Can Only Imagine took third place with $1.423 million. That represented a 66.8 percent decline from Sunday and a slim 13.4 percent decrease from last Monday. I Can Only Imagine
has been aided by strong word of mouth, the approaching Easter holiday and expanding to an additional 624 locations this week. The film is on the verge of passing the $40 million mark with a significantly stronger than expected
eleven-day gross of $39.507 million. I Can Only Imagine is running an impressive 18.9 percent ahead of the $33.217 million eleven-day take of last year’s The Shack. |
Warner Bros. and MGM’s Tomb Raider claimed fourth with $1.031 million. Tomb Raider was down 64.0 percent from Sunday and down a sizable 44.0 percent from last Monday
(when the film was playing on IMAX screens). Tomb Raider is running in line with expectations with an eleven-day take of $42.452 million. That places the film 27.7 percent behind the $58.711 million eleven-day haul of last
year’s The Mummy. |
Paramount and MGM’s Sherlock Gnomes followed closely behind in fifth with $1.026 million. Sherlock Gnomes trialed Tomb Raider by a very slim $4,425 for the day. Sherlock Gnomes was
down 67.9 percent from Sunday’s performance. The four-day start for Sherlock Gnomes stands at a modest $11.631 million. That is below expectations and is an underwhelming 58.5 percent below the $28.060 million four-day launch
of 2011’s Gnomeo and Juliet. |
Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time and Fox’s Love, Simon placed in sixth and seventh with respective daily grosses of $926,151 and $822,124. Both films held up nicely yesterday, as
A Wrinkle in Time was down 62.3 percent from Sunday and down 15.3 percent from last Monday, while Love, Simon was down 60.9 percent from Sunday and down 14.6 percent from last Monday. Respective total grosses stand at a
respectable $74.984 million for A Wrinkle in Time in 18 days and at a promising $24.325 million for Love, Simon in eleven days. |
