Daily Box Office Report
Monday, March 19, 2018

By Daniel Garris

Disney’s Black Panther led the daily box office on Monday with $2.188 million. Black Panther has now led the daily box office for 30 of the past 32 days. Black Panther declined 71.2 percent from Sunday and 45.8 percent from last Monday. It should be noted that percentage declines from last Monday were inflated in general as a result of many schools being out for spring break last week. Black Panther has grossed a massive $607.216 million in 32 days and is now just $12.594 million away from surpassing last year’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi to move into sixth place on the all-time domestic list.

Warner Bros. and MGM’s Tomb Raider placed in a close second with $1.841 million. That represented a 69.0 percent decrease from Sunday’s performance. The four-day start for Tomb Raider stands at $25.474 million, which is in line with pre-release expectations. Tomb Raider is running 39.2 percent ahead of the recent $18.298 million four-day launch of Red Sparrow and 25.6 percent behind the $34.259 million four-day haul of last year’s The Mummy. It should be noted that Tomb Raider is performing significantly stronger internationally.

Roadside’s I Can Only Imagine continued its break-out start with a third place take of $1.644 million. I Can Only Imagine was down 66.4 percent from Sunday. With a four-day take of $18.743 million, I Can Only Imagine continues to essentially double its high-end expectations. I Can Only Imagine is running an exceptional 6.7 percent ahead of the $17.669 million four-day haul of last year’s The Shack and is doing so in 1,259 fewer locations. With the aid of strong early word of mouth, I Can Only Imagine is highly likely to hold up well going forward.

Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time took fourth with $1.094 million. That represented a 76.6 percent decline from Sunday and a sharp 58.6 percent decrease from last Monday. A Wrinkle in Time has grossed $61.846 million in eleven days, which is on the lower end of expectations. A Wrinkle in Time is running 17.4 percent ahead of the $52.680 million eleven-day take of 2016’s Alice Through the Looking Glass and just 4.8 percent behind the $64.992 million eleven-day haul of 2015’s Tomorrowland.

Fox’s Love, Simon rounded out the day’s top five with $962,536. Love, Simon was down 67.6 percent from Sunday. With a four-day start of $12.719 million, Love, Simon continues to perform right in line with expectations. The film is running 0.9 percent ahead of the $12.604 million four-day gross of last year’s Everything, Everything (which also starred Nick Robinson).
