Universal’s Fifty Shades Freed led the daily box office on Monday with $2.776 M. Fifty Shades Freed has now topped the daily box office for three of the past four days. The film declined
63.1 percent from Sunday’s performance, which represented the day’s strongest daily percentage hold among wide releases. In comparison, last year’s Fifty Shades Darker decreased 58.1 percent on its first Monday to take
in $3.904 M. The four-day start for Fifty Shades Freed stands at $41.336 M. That is towards the higher end of expectations and 18.2 percent below the $50.511 M four-day haul of Fifty Shades Darker. |
Sony’s Peter Rabbit claimed second with $1.470 M. Peter Rabbit was down 81.8 percent from Sunday; a sure sign of how heavily the film is skewing towards family audiences. Peter Rabbit has
grossed a stronger than expected $26.481 M through four days of release. The film is running 3.9 percent ahead of the $25.494 four-day start of 2015’s Paddington (which had the added advantage of its first Monday falling on Martin Luther King Jr. Day).
Peter Rabbit is highly likely to display strong holding power going forward, thanks in part to good word of mouth and limited upcoming competition for family audiences. |
Warner’s The 15:17 to Paris placed in third with $1.078 M. That represented a 68.1 percent decline from Sunday. The 15:17 to Paris has grossed $13.633 M in four days, which is right in
line with pre-release expectations. The 15:17 to Paris is running 20.4 percent behind the recent $17.119 M four-day launch of fellow Warner Bros. release 12 Strong. |
Sony’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle took fourth place with $730 K. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle continues to hold up extremely well, as the film was down 75.6 percent from Sunday and
down a very slim 4.0 percent from last Monday. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has grossed $366.585 M in 55 days, which gives the film an exceptional current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 10.14 to 1. |
Fox’s The Greatest Showman rounded out Monday’s top five with $545 K. The Greatest Showman was down 69.7 percent from Sunday and down only 13.0 percent from last Monday. With an impressive
55-day total of $147.125 M, The Greatest Showman has a whopping current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 16.71 to 1 and is just $2.875 M away from reaching the $150 M domestic mark. |
