By Daniel Garris

Warner’s 12 Strong was up one spot from Monday to move into first place on Tuesday with $1.787 M. It was a close four-way race for first place yesterday, as first place and fourth place were separated by just $223 K for the day. 12 Strong was up 37.0 percent over Monday’s performance. The five-day start for 12 Strong stands at $18.906 M. That is towards the higher end of expectations and places 12 Strong 10.2 percent behind the $21.063 M five-day haul of 2016’s 13 Hours.

Sony’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was up one spot from Monday to take second place with $1.766 M. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle trailed 12 Strong by a slim $21,093 for the day. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle continues to display tremendous holding power, as the film was up 46.4 percent over Monday and down 27.0 percent from last Tuesday. The 35-day total for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle stands at a massive $319.422 M.

Fox and DreamWorks’ The Post was also up one spot from Monday to claim third with $1.579 M. Thanks in part to receiving Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and Best Actress on Tuesday, The Post experienced a 57.1 percent bump over Monday and decreased 27.2 percent from last Tuesday. The Post has grossed a healthy $47.343 M through twelve days of wide release and an additional three weeks of platform release.

STXfilms’ Den of Thieves was down three spots from Monday to place in fourth on Tuesday with $1.564 M. Den of Thieves increased 19.8 percent over Monday’s performance, which represented the day’s weakest daily percentage increase among wide releases. Den of Thieves has grossed a stronger than expected $18.075 M in five days. The film is running 15.0 percent ahead of the $15.715 M five-day launch of last year’s The Foreigner.

Fox’s The Greatest Showman rounded out Tuesday’s top five with $1.260 M. That represented a 48.6 percent increase over Monday and a very slim 10.2 percent decrease from last Tuesday. The Greatest Showman continues to steadily pad its status as one of 2017’s bigger surprises with a 35-day take of $115.233 M. That gives The Greatest Showman an exceptional current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 13.09 to 1.

With the aid of yesterday’s Academy Award nominations, Best Picture nominees experienced significant Oscar bumps on Tuesday. Fox Searchlight’s The Shape of Water was up a whopping 104.5 percent over Monday to gross $503 K, Focus’ Phantom Thread increased 47.3 percent to gross $481 K, fellow Focus release Darkest Hour was up 52.7 percent to take in $447 K, Fox Searchlight’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri jumped 60.7 percent to register $418 K and A24’s Lady Bird increased 62.5 percent to claim $186 K. Respective current total grosses stand at $41.533 M for Darkest Hour, at $39.354 M for Lady Bird, $32.673 M for Three Billboards, $30.944 M for The Shape of Water and at $6.866 M for Phantom Thread.
