Daily Box Office Report
Monday, December 25, 2017

By Daniel Garris

Star Wars: The Last Jedi grossed $27.46 M on Christmas Day to lead the daily box office for an eleventh consecutive day. Star Wars: The Last Jedi increased 55.8 percent over Sunday and a healthy 27.4 percent over last Monday. Star Wars: The Last Jedi claimed the second largest Christmas Day gross of all-time (behind only 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens and ahead of last year’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). The Christmas Day gross for Star Wars: The Last Jedi was 6.2 percent ahead of the $25.87 M Christmas Day gross of Rogue One and 44.3 percent behind the $49.33 M Christmas Day gross of The Force Awakens. For the four-day frame, Star Wars: The Last Jedi took in $99.03 M, which was down a sharp 55.0 percent from last weekend’s massive opening weekend performance.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi has grossed $395.63 M in eleven days and is obviously set to zoom past the $400 M domestic mark today. The film is running 24.4 percent ahead of the $318.12 M eleven-day haul of Rogue One and 30.8 percent behind the $571.42 M eleven-day take of The Force Awakens. Internationally, Star Wars: The Last Jedi took in an estimated $14.8 M on Christmas Day. Star Wars: The Last Jedi has grossed $396.0 M to date internationally and $791.6 M to date globally.

Sony’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle continued to build momentum on Christmas Day with an estimated second place take of $19.00 M. That represented a terrific 109.7 percent jump over Sunday and the seventh largest Christmas Day gross of all-time. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle saw its projections increase as the weekend went on and ultimately took in an estimated $55.40 M for the four-day holiday weekend. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has grossed a stronger than expected $72.00 M to date. That places Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle 6.4 percent ahead of the $67.66 M six-day start of 2006’s Night at the Museum (which opened on a Friday) and only 4.7 percent behind the $75.54 M six-day launch of last year’s Sing. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle looks set to hold up extremely well going forward, especially given the film’s initial back-loading over its first six days of release.

Universal’s Pitch Perfect 3 placed in third with $6.50 M. Pitch Perfect 3 jumped 146.7 percent over Sunday’s especially deflated Christmas Eve performance. Pitch Perfect 3 took in $26.42 M in its first four days of release, which is on the very low end of scaled back expectations. The film is running 57.8 percent ahead of the $16.74 M grossed by 2012’s Pitch Perfect during its first four days of wide release and a lackluster 64.5 percent behind the $74.43 M four-day start of 2015’s Pitch Perfect 2. Potential for Pitch Perfect 3 appears to have been limited by poor critical reviews and by competition from The Greatest Showman, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Fox’s The Greatest Showman proved to be a strong Christmas Day choice, as the film increased an exceptional 161.8 percent over Sunday to take in $5.60 M on Monday. The Greatest Showman took in $14.41 M over the four-day weekend and has grossed $19.01 M in its first six days. Thanks in part to the film’s strong Christmas Day performance, The Greatest Showman performed towards the lower end of expectations for the six-day frame. The Greatest Showman is running 36.0 percent behind the $29.72 M six-day launch of last year’s Passengers.

Places fifth through eighth were bunched closely together on Monday, as fifth place and eighth place were separated by just $205 K for the day.

Disney’s Coco led the bunch with a fifth place take of $2.805 M. Coco was up 112.6 percent over Sunday and up a very strong 138.8 percent over last Monday. For the four-day weekend, Coco took in $8.19 M. The 34-day total for Coco stands at an impressive $164.31 M.

Fellow computer animated film Ferdinand followed in sixth with $2.802 M. Fox’s Ferdinand increased 83.7 percent over Sunday and a strong 132.2 percent over last Monday. For the four-day frame, Ferdinand totaled $10.12 M. Ferdinand has grossed a modest $29.60 M in eleven days, but should continue to hold up well going forward.

Paramount’s Downsizing placed in seventh with $2.72 M. That represented a 135.0 percent increase over Sunday. Downsizing debuted with $7.67 M in its first four days, which was below the already modest expectations for the film.

Sony’s All the Money in the World began its run with an estimated eighth place take of $2.60 M for the day. That was 48.0 percent below the $5.00 M Christmas opening day gross of 2014’s The Gambler.

Also opening on Christmas Day were STXfilms’ Molly’s Game and Focus’ Phantom Thread. Molly’s Game grossed a promising $1.04 M from 271 locations, for a daily per-location average of $3,845. Phantom Thread took in $127 K from just 4 locations in New York and Los Angeles for a massive per-location average of $31,818 for the day. Molly’s Game will expand into wide release on January 5, while Phantom Thread will expand into nationwide release on January 19.
