Daily Box Office Report
Monday, October 23, 2017

By Daniel Garris

Lionsgate’s Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween grossed $1.060 M on Monday to lead the daily box office for a fourth consecutive day. Boo 2! A Madea Halloween was down a sharp 78.6 percent from Sunday’s performance. In comparison, last year's Boo! A Madea Halloween slid 75.5 percent on its first Monday to gross $1.782 M. Boo 2! A Madea Halloween has grossed a solid $22.287 M in four days. That places the film 26.4 percent behind the $30.284 M four-day start of Boo! A Madea Halloween.

Warner’s Geostorm placed in a very close second with $1.053 M. Geostorm trailed Boo 2! A Madea Halloween by only $7,453 for the day. Geostorm declined 72.6 percent from Sunday. While Geostorm continues to perform slightly ahead of its modest expectations with a four-day launch of $14.760 M, in the bigger picture the film is performing poorly domestically with its price tag in mind. Geostorm is running 36.6 percent behind the $23.290 M four-day take of last year’s London Has Fallen.

Fellow Warner Bros. release Blade Runner 2049 took third place with $758 K. Blade Runner 2049 decreased 64.5 percent from Sunday and a sizable 47.6 percent from last Tuesday. The 18-day total for Blade Runner 2049 stands at a significantly softer than expected $74.961 M. Blade Runner 2049 is running 36.5 percent behind the $118.116 M 18-day haul of 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road.

Universal’s Happy Death Day claimed fourth with $644 K. Happy Death Day declined 71.7 percent from Sunday and a sharp 52.9 percent from last Monday. Happy Death Day continues to exceed expectations and impress with its low-budget in mind with an eleven-day take of $41.317 M. Happy Death Day is running 4.4 percent behind the $43.210 M eleven-day gross of 2015’s The Visit.

Sony’s Only the Brave rounded out Monday’s top five with $602 K. Only the Brave slowed 61.0 percent from Sunday, which represented one of the day’s stronger daily percentage holds among wide releases. The film has grossed $6.604 M in four days, which is on the low end of its modest expectations. Only the Brave will hope to hold up well going forward thanks in part to strong critical reviews and strong word of mouth.
