Daily Box Office Report
Wednesday, August 9, 2017

By Daniel Garris

Warner’s Dunkirk remained in first place at the daily box office on Wednesday with $1.953 M. Dunkirk has now led the daily box office for 18 of the past 20 days. Dunkirk was down 28.8 percent from Tuesday and down a respectable 44.4 percent from last Wednesday. The 20-day total for Dunkirk stands at $140.506 M. That places the film 9.6 percent ahead of the $128.252 M grossed by 2014’s Interstellar after 20 days of wide release. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a fourth weekend take of $11.5 M for Dunkirk.

Sony’s The Emoji Movie held steady in second place with $1.631 M. The Emoji Movie decreased 36.9 percent from Tuesday and a solid 42.2 percent from last Wednesday. The Emoji Movie continues to perform in line with expectations with a thirteen-day gross of $55.553 M. The film is running 9.1 percent ahead of the $50.924 M thirteen-day take of 2015’s Pixels. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that The Emoji Movie will gross $6.2 M during its third weekend.

Fellow Sony release The Dark Tower grossed $1.467 M to remain in third. The Dark Tower was down a sharp 39.9 percent from Tuesday, which isn’t a good sign for the film going forward. The Dark Tower is performing on the low end of scaled back expectations with a six-day take of $25.123 M. That places the film an underwhelming 42.6 percent behind the $43.754 M six-day haul of last year’s The Magnificent Seven. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a second weekend gross of $8.0M for The Dark Tower.

Universal’s Girls Trip continued to claim fourth place with $1.163 M. Girls Trip decreased 30.4 percent from Tuesday and 42.9 percent from last Wednesday. Girls Trip has grossed a very impressive $89.589 M through 20 days of release, which leaves the film just $10.411 M away from reaching the $100 M domestic milestone. BoxOfficeReport is predicting that Girls Trip will gross $7.8 M in its fourth weekend.

Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming rounded out the day’s unchanged top five with $1.121 M. Spider-Man: Homecoming declined 32.7 percent from Tuesday and a very solid 39.8 percent from last Wednesday. Spider-Man: Homecoming has grossed $299.290 M in 34 days and is set to surpass the $300 M domestic mark today. BoxOfficeReport is predicting $6.0 M for Spider-Man: Homecoming this weekend.

Elsewhere in the top ten on Wednesday, Aviron Pictures’ Kidnap took seventh place with $850 K, while Annapurna Pictures’ Detroit placed in tenth with $572 K. Kidnap fell a very sharp 41.4 percent from Tuesday, while Detroit was down 37.9 percent for the day. Total grosses stand at a stronger than expected $13.412 M for Kidnap in six days and at a less than expected $9.919 M for Detroit after six days of wide release (and an additional week in platform release).
