Daily Box Office Report
Thursday, July 27, 2017

By Daniel Garris

Warner’s Dunkirk grossed $5.193 M on Thursday to lead the daily box office for a seventh consecutive day. Dunkirk was up 0.4 percent over Wednesday’s performance. It should be noted that daily percentage holds in general were strong yesterday for a Thursday. Dunkirk was the week’s top film with a seven-day start of $74.706 M. That places Dunkirk 8.9 percent ahead of the $68.620 M grossed by 2014’s Interstellar after seven days of wide release and 25.4 percent behind the $100.158 M seven-day start of 2010’s Inception.

Universal’s Girls Trip rounded out its strong first week of release with a second place take of $3.174 M. Girls Trip increased 0.5 percent over Wednesday. Girls Trip exceeded expectations this week with a seven-day start of $45.439 M. The film placed in second for the weekly frame. Girls Trip is running 23.3 percent ahead of the $36.847 M seven-day launch of last year’s Bad Moms and 6.0 percent ahead of the $42.868 M seven-day take of 2012’s Think Like a Man.

Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming held steady in third with $2.775 M. Spider-Man: Homecoming was down a very slim 0.4 percent from Wednesday and down a solid 37.9 percent from last Thursday. Spider-Man: Homecoming placed in third for the week with $35.205 M. That was down 47.2 percent from the previous frame (when the film was still playing on IMAX screens) and brings the film’s three-week total to a healthy $264.907 M.

Fox’s War for the Planet of the Apes continued to claim fourth place with $2.017 M. War for the Planet of the Apes declined 5.5 percent from Wednesday and a respectable 46.1 percent from last Thursday. War for the Planet of the Apes took fourth place this week with $30.962 M. The film was down a sharp 60.0 percent from its opening week performance and has grossed $108.313 M through two weeks of release.

Universal’s Despicable Me 3 rounded out the day’s unchanged top five with $1.956 M. Despicable Me 3 was up 0.7 percent over Wednesday and down just 29.6 percent from last Thursday. That represented a strong daily hold, especially with Sony’s The Emoji Movie entering the marketplace Thursday evening. Despicable Me 3 was down 30.0 percent this week to place in sixth with $22.092 M. The four-week total for the film stands at a very solid $222.700 M.

STXfilms and EuropaCorp’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets rounded out its first week of release with a sixth place take of $1.328 M. Valerian declined 5.1 percent from Wednesday’s performance. The expensive Valerian claimed fifth place this week with a modest seven-day start of $23.826 M.
