Daily Box Office Report
Tuesday, July 25, 2017

By Daniel Garris

Warnerís Dunkirk grossed $7.384 M on Tuesday to lead the daily box office for a fifth straight day. Dunkirk increased a respectable 14.6 percent over Mondayís strong daily hold. Dunkirk passed the $60 M mark yesterday and has grossed $64.341 M through five days of release. The film continues to perform towards the higher end of its wide-ranging expectations. Dunkirk is running 4.0 percent ahead of the $61.837 M grossed by 2014ís Interstellar after five days of wide release and 22.2 percent behind the $82.736 M five-day start of 2010ís Inception.

Having caught Dunkirk earlier this week, the film is highly recommended, as I personally feel itís among the best films of the decade.

Universalís Girls Trip remained in a strong second place with $4.441 M. Girls Trip increased 28.2 percent over Mondayís performance, which represented the dayís largest daily percentage increase among wide releases. The five-day total for Girls Trip stands at a stronger than expected $39.108 M. Girls Trip is running 27.7 percent ahead of the $30.614 M five-day launch of last yearís Bad Moms and a slim 0.2 percent ahead of the $39.023 M five-day start of 2012ís Think Like a Man.

Sonyís Spider-Man: Homecoming held steady in third with $4.131 M. Spider-Man: Homecoming was up 22.9 percent over Monday and down a respectable 45.2 percent from last Tuesday (when the film was still playing on IMAX screens). Spider-Man: Homecoming has grossed a healthy $259.344 M in 19 days. The film is now just $2.687 M away from the $262.031 M final domestic gross of 2012ís The Amazing Spider-Man and will pass that total either today or Thursday.

Foxís War for the Planet of the Apes continued to claim fourth place with $3.322 M. War for the Planet of the Apes increased 27.6 percent over Monday and decreased a sizable 53.5 percent from last Tuesday. The twelve-day gross of War for the Planet of the Apes stands at $104.161 M, which places the film 29.9 percent behind the $148.490 M twelve-day take of 2014ís Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Universalís Despicable Me 3 rounded out the dayís unchanged top five with $2.853 M. Despicable Me 3 was up 22.6 percent over Monday and down just 28.6 percent from last Tuesday. Despicable Me 3 has grossed a very solid $218.800 M in 26 days, which is 25.1 percent behind the $291.958 M 26-day take of 2015ís Minions.

STXfilms and EuropaCorpís Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets claimed sixth place again with $2.272 M. Valerian increased 24.8 percent over Monday. The expensive film has grossed $21.100 M in five days, which is towards the lower end of relatively modest expectations. Valerian is running 3.8 percent behind the $21.923 M five-day start of Ghost in the Shell earlier this year.
