Warner’s Dunkirk was off to a strong start on Thursday night with an estimated $5.50 M from preview shows that began at 6 PM. The preview gross for Dunkirk was 9.8 percent stronger than
the $5.01 M preview gross of War for the Planet of the Apes last week. That is an especially encouraging comparison for Dunkirk, especially as a non-sequel
(though it should be noted that previews for Dunkirk began an hour earlier than last week’s previews for War for the Planet of the Apes). As is normally the case, the preview gross for Dunkirk will be
counted towards Friday’s opening day performance. |
Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming grossed $4.467 M on Thursday to lead the daily box office for a third consecutive day. Spider-Man: Homecoming was down 10.1 percent from Wednesday and down
a sizable 49.7 percent from last Thursday. Spider-Man: Homecoming took second place for the week with $66.631 M. That was down a sharp 59.1 percent from the film’s opening week performance and brings the film’s two-week
total to a healthy $229.702 M. Yesterday saw Spider-Man: Homecoming pass the final grosses of both The Fate of the Furious and Logan to become the fourth highest grossing release of 2017 so far. |
Fox’s War for the Planet of the Apes held steady in second with $3.742 M. War for the Planet of the Apes declined a sharp 15.2 percent from Wednesday, as the film took a clear hit from
Dunkirk (in addition to Girls Trip and Valerian) entering the marketplace on Thursday night. War for the Planet of the Apes took first place for the week with a seven-day start of $77.351 M.
While that was in line with expectations, it appears as though the film will be more front-loaded than both of its predecessors where. War for the Planet of the Apes is running 24.9 percent behind the $102.953 M
seven-day take of 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. |
Universal’s Despicable Me 3 took in $2.779 M to remain in third place. Despicable Me 3 held up nicely on Thursday, as the film was down a very slim 0.3 percent from Wednesday and down a
solid 38.5 percent from last Thursday. Despicable Me 3 crossed the $200 M mark yesterday and has grossed $200.608 M through 21 days of release. For the week, Despicable Me 3 placed in third with $31.566 M.
That represented a 41.4 percent decline from the previous frame. |
Universal’s Girls Trip and STX Entertainment’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets both took in estimated preview grosses of $1.70 M on Thursday night. The preview gross of
Girls Trip was far more promising than the preview gross for Valerian, given that the preview gross for Valerian should represent a significantly higher percentage of this weekend’s gross than the
preview gross of Girls Trip should (especially with previews for Valerian starting at 5PM, as opposed to previews for Girls Trip beginning at 7PM). Girls Trip was also far less expensive to
produce than the expensive Valerian was. Preview grosses for each film will be counted towards their respective opening weekend performances. |
Meanwhile, Sony’s Baby Driver took fourth place on Thursday with $1.071 M and Warner’s Wonder Woman rounded out the day’s top five with $826 K. Baby Driver was down just
33.3 percent from last Thursday, while Wonder Woman declined a very similar 33.8 percent. For the week, Baby Driver was down 31.8 percent to place in fourth with $13.832 M and Wonder Woman decreased a
slim 30.0 percent to claim sixth with $10.602 M. Respective total grosses stand at a massive $384.403 M for Wonder Woman in 49 days and at an impressive $78.234 M for Baby Driver in 23 days. |
