Daily Box Office Report
Monday, July 17, 2017

By Daniel Garris

Fox’s War for the Planet of the Apes took in $5.787 M on Monday to lead the daily box office for a fourth consecutive day. War of the Planet of the Apes declined 61.0 percent from Sunday, which represented the day’s largest daily percentage decline among wide releases. The film has grossed $62.050 M in four days, which is in line with expectations. War for the Planet of the Apes is running a slim 1.0 percent ahead of the $61.459 M four-day start of 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes (which fell 58.3 percent on its first Monday to take in $6.653 M) and 23.2 percent behind the $80.828 M four-day take of 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming placed in a close second on Monday with $5.456 M. Spider-Man: Homecoming trailed War for the Planet of the Apes by just $331,757 for the day. Spider-Man: Homecoming decreased 58.0 percent from Sunday and a sharp 55.3 percent from last Monday. The eleven-day total for Spider-Man: Homecoming stands at a healthy $212.731 M. That places the film 43.3 percent ahead of the $148.456 M eleven-day gross of 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and 12.8 percent behind the $243.830 M eleven-day haul of 2007’s Spider-Man 3.

Universal’s Despicable Me 3 claimed third place with $2.646 M. Despicable Me 3 was down 52.1 percent from Sunday and down a solid 39.5 percent from last Monday, as the film continues to display signs of stabilizing. Despicable Me 3 has grossed $191.046 M in 18 days, which places the film 28.1 percent behind the $265.545 M 18-day take of 2015’s Minions. While Despicable Me 3 is running below expectations, the film is having a very solid run with its relatively modest production budget for a high-profile computer animated film in mind.

Sony’s Baby Driver followed in fourth with $1.195 M. Baby Driver slowed 52.1 percent from Sunday and just 28.5 percent from last Monday. Baby Driver continues to outpace expectations with an impressive 20-day gross of $74.311 M. That already gives Baby Driver a current total gross to opening weekend ratio of 3.62 to 1. Baby Driver is running a very slim 2.5 percent behind the $76.203 M 20-day gross of 2013’s This Is the End.

Warner’s Wonder Woman rounded out Monday’s top five with $875 K. Wonder Woman declined 55.3 percent from Sunday and a slim 26.1 percent from last Monday. Wonder Woman has grossed a massive $381.479 M in 46 days, which places the film’s current total gross to opening weekend ratio at 3.70 to 1. On Monday, Wonder Woman surpassed 2003’s Finding Nemo and 2011’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 to move into 28th place on the all-time unadjusted domestic list.

Lionsgate’s The Big Sick claimed sixth place with $769 K. The Big Sick decreased 60.8 percent from Sunday and increased 129.1 percent from last Monday (when the film was playing in just 326 locations). The Big Sick has grossed $16.769 M in 25 days and will hope to hold up well going forward thanks in part to its strong critical reviews and strong word of mouth. The Big Sick has a rating of 9.124 on our LoveHate Rate aggregate measurement of critical and online ratings, which is currently the highest score of any 2017 release to date.
