Daily Box Office Report
Wednesday, June 28, 2017

By Daniel Garris

Sony’s Baby Driver debuted in first place on Wednesday with a promising $5.707 M. The film’s opening day performance includes an estimated $2.10 M from Tuesday night preview shows that began at 7 PM. The opening day gross for Baby Driver was 27.0 percent below the $7.816 M opening day take of 2013’s This Is the End and 6.2 percent ahead of the $5.372 M opening day gross of 2015’s Entourage. Based on those comparisons, Baby Driver appears to be headed for a five-day start somewhere in the area of $19 M - $25 M. However, it is also possible that Baby Driver could pick up slightly more over the weekend than those comparisons suggest, given the film’s terrific critical reviews and strong early word of mouth. Baby Driver has a score of 9.259 on our LoveHate Rate aggregate measurement of critical and online ratings, which is currently the highest score to date among 2017 releases. The film also received a healthy A- rating on CinemaScore.

Paramount’s Transformers: The Last Knight was down one spot from Tuesday to fall to second on Wednesday with $3.231 M. Transformers: The Last Knight was down a sharp 43.1 percent from Tuesday and down a very sharp 79.4 percent from last Wednesday, as the film clearly took a hit from Baby Driver entering the marketplace. Transformers: The Last Knight passed the $80 M mark yesterday and has grossed $82.100 M in eight days. That places the film a disappointing 44.9 percent behind the $148.965 M eight-day take of 2014’s Transformers: Age of Extinction and 56.0 percent ahead of the $52.615 M eight-day gross of 2015’s Terminator Genisys.

Disney’s Cars 3 was down one spot from Tuesday to claim third place with $2.862 M. Cars 3 declined 30.4 percent from Tuesday and a very solid 34.0 percent from last Wednesday. Cars 3 likely got a bit of a boost yesterday from audiences wanting to catch the film before Universal’s Despicable Me 3 enters the marketplace. Cars 3 has grossed $108.667 M in thirteen days. The film is running 2.9 percent ahead of the $105.580 M thirteen-day gross of 2014’s How to Train Your Dragon 2 and 16.4 percent behind the $130.038 M thirteen-day take of 2011’s Cars 2.

Warner’s Wonder Woman placed in fourth for the day with $2.764 M. Wonder Woman continues to display tremendous holding power, as the film was down 29.2 percent from Tuesday and down just 28.2 percent from last Wednesday. Wonder Woman has grossed a massive $327.848 M in 27 days. Yesterday saw Wonder Woman surpass the $325.100 M final gross of last year’s Suicide Squad and either today or tomorrow, Wonder Woman will pass the $330.360 M final gross of last year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures’ 47 Meters Down rounded out Wednesday’s top five with $919 K. 47 Meters Down also continued to display healthy holding power yesterday, as the film decreased 24.9 percent from Tuesday and a slim 25.1 percent from last Wednesday. 47 Meters Down has grossed a significantly stronger than expected $27.085 M in thirteen days.

On the platform front, Lionsgate’s The Big Sick grossed $30,632 from 5 locations in New York & Los Angeles, while Focus’ The Beguiled took in $24,148 from 4 locations in New York & Los Angeles. Respective daily per-location averages were $6,126 for The Big Sick and $6,037 for The Beguiled. The Big Sick has grossed $532 K in six days and The Beguiled has grossed $302 K over the same six-day span. This weekend The Beguiled will be playing in 673 locations, while The Big Sick will be playing in 71 locations.
