Daily Box Office Report
Tuesday, June 6, 2017

By Daniel Garris

Warner’s Wonder Woman grossed $14.342 M on Tuesday to comfortably lead the daily box office for a fifth consecutive day. Wonder Woman increased a solid 22.0 percent over Monday’s performance. In comparison, 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy was up 1.6 percent on its first Tuesday to take in $11.908 M, while 2013’s Man of Steel was down 8.5 percent on its first Tuesday to register $11.511 M. Wonder Woman has grossed a strong $129.351 M through four days. The film is running 9.7 percent ahead of the $117.951 M five-day start of Guardians of the Galaxy and 15.3 percent behind the $152.778 M Man of Steel had grossed through five days of release. Based on its holding power thus far, Wonder Woman appears headed for a healthy second weekend hold for a comic book adaptation.

Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales held steady in second with $3.410 M. Dead Men Tell No Tales was up 35.3 percent from Monday, but still down a sharp 50.2 percent from last Tuesday (when the film was still playing in IMAX locations). The twelve-day total for Dead Men Tell No Tales stands at $121.028 M, which is on the low end of expectations. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is running a slim 1.2 percent behind the $122.451 M twelve-day take of last year’s X-Men: Apocalypse and 27.4 percent behind the $166.775 M twelve-day haul of 2011’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Fox and DreamWorks Animation’s Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie took in $2.702 M to remain in third place. Captain Underpants increased a healthy 34.9 percent over Monday. Captain Underpants has grossed $28.557 M in five days, which is in line with expectations and is very solid with the film’s relatively modest price tag in mind. The film is running 4.7 percent ahead of the $27.276 M five-day gross of last year’s Ice Age: Collision Course and 23.3 percent behind the $37.242 M five-day start of 2014’s Mr. Peabody & Sherman.

Paramount’s Baywatch registered $1.514 M to continue to claim fourth. Baywatch increased 34.4 percent from Monday and decreased a solid 40.3 percent from last Tuesday. While it is showing recent signs of stabilizing, Baywatch has grossed a softer than expected $44.606 M in thirteen days. That places the film a disappointing 51.5 percent behind the $92.060 M thirteen-day take of 2013’s The Hangover Part III.

Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 rounded out the day’s unchanged top five with $1.436 M. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was up 30.6 percent over Monday and down a very solid 35.2 percent from last Tuesday. The 33-day total for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stands at a massive $358.116 M, which places the film 26.7 percent ahead of the $282.592 M 33-day gross of 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
