Daily Box Office Report
Thursday, May 11, 2017

By Daniel Garris

Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 rounded out its first week of release with $7.159 M on Thursday to remain in first place at the daily box office. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was down just 4.9 percent from Wednesday. In comparison, 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy declined 13.4 percent on its first Thursday to gross $7.631 M, while 2013’s Iron Man 3 was down 6.2 percent to claim $7.610 M. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 grossed $183.157 M during its first seven days. That was an impressive 36.3 percent stronger than the $134.391 M seven-day start of Guardians of the Galaxy and 13.8 percent below the $212.421 M seven-day haul of Iron Man 3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is already the fourth highest grossing release of 2017 domestically and will move into second place for the year by the end of the weekend.

Universal’s The Fate of the Furious held steady in second place with $527 K. The Fate of the Furious slowed 7.3 percent from Wednesday and a respectable 45.2 percent from last Thursday. The Fate of the Furious placed in a distant second for the week with $11.126 M. The film was down 56.0 percent from the previous frame and has grossed $209.734 M in four weeks. The Fate of the Furious is running 6.2 percent behind the $223.687 M four-week gross of 2013’s Fast & Furious 6.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast was up one spot from Wednesday to move into third place on Thursday with $380 K. The film was up 0.7 percent over Wednesday and down just 18.8 percent from last Thursday. Beauty and the Beast placed in fifth for the week with $6.680 M. That represented a 25.4 percent decline from the previous week and brings the film’s eight-week total to a massive $489.331 M.

Lionsgate and Pantelion’s How to Be a Latin Lover was down one spot from Wednesday to land in fourth with $334 K. How to Be a Latin Lover was down a sharp 38.1 percent from Wednesday (as the film’s domestic performance on Wednesday was clearly inflated by Mother’s Day being celebrated in Mexico) and down a solid 38.9 percent from last Thursday. How to Be a Latin Lover took fourth place this week with $6.990 M. The film was down 54.6 percent from its opening week performance and has grossed a healthy $22.393 M in two weeks.

STX Entertainment and EuropaCorp’s The Circle rounded out Thursday’s top five with $298 K. The Circle decreased 13.9 percent from Wednesday and a solid 37.4 percent from last Thursday. The Circle placed in sixth this week with $5.467 M. That was down 53.3 percent from the film’s opening week performance and brings the film’s two-week total to a softer than expected $17.163 M.
