Daily Box Office Report
Monday, May 1, 2017

By Daniel Garris

Universal’s The Fate of the Furious took in $1.340 M on Monday to continue to lead the daily box office. The Fate of the Furious was down 76.9 percent from Sunday and down a solid 45.6 percent from last Monday. With an 18-day gross of $194.608 M, The Fate of the Furious is just $5.392 M away from becoming the third release of 2017 to reach the $200 M domestic mark. The Fate of the Furious is running 5.1 percent behind the $204.960 M 18-day take of 2013’s Fast & Furious 6.

Lionsgate and Pantelion’s How to Be a Latin Lover placed in second with $849 K. On the heels of a very strong daily percentage hold on Sunday, How to Be a Latin Lover was down 79.1 percent from Sunday’s performance on Monday. How to Be a Latin Lover has grossed a stronger than expected $13.101 M in four days. The film is running 26.2 percent ahead of the $10.379 M four-day launch of previous Eugenio Derbez vehicle Instructions Not Included back in 2013.

STX Entertainment and EuropaCorp’s The Circle took third place with $617 K. The Circle was down a relatively solid 71.1 percent from Sunday, which is a bit surprising given the negative reviews and poor early word of mouth the film has generated. In the bigger picture, The Circle is still under-performing with a four-day take of $9.651 M. That places the film 40.6 percent behind the $16.250 M four-day start of last year’s Inferno.

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion grossed an estimated $590 K on Monday for fourth place. That brings the film’s very impressive four-day start to just over $11.2 M from only 425 locations.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast rounded out Monday’s top five with $483 K. Beauty and the Beast decreased 76.4 percent from Sunday and a slim 23.8 percent from last Monday. With a 46-day gross of $481.009 M, Beauty and the Beast currently ranks in ninth place on the all-time unadjusted domestic list. Before long, the film will pass the $486.296 M total gross of last year’s Finding Dory to move into eighth place on the chart.

Fox and DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby claimed sixth place with $419 K. The Boss Baby was down 86.0 percent from Sunday and down just 24.1 percent from last Monday. The Boss Baby has grossed a stronger than expected $149.207 M in 32 days. That leaves the film just $793 K away from reaching the $150 M domestic mark.
