By Daniel Garris

Great India Films’ Baahubali 2: The Conclusion grossed an estimated $2.5 M from Thursday shows that began as early as 12:30PM. That would have placed Baahubali 2: The Conclusion in first place among all films on Thursday, but word is that Thursday’s grosses will be officially counted as preview grosses towards the film’s opening day performance for Friday. Either way, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion is off to a terrific start.

Universal’s The Fate of the Furious rounded out its second week of release with $1.941 M on Thursday. The Fate of the Furious was down 8.1 percent from Wednesday and down 57.3 percent from last Thursday. The Fate of the Furious was easily the week’s top film with a weekly take of $48.435 M. That represented a 61.2 percent decline from the film’s opening week performance and brings the film’s two-week total to $173.332 M. The Fate of the Furious is running 5.4 percent behind the $183.186 M 14-day take of 2013’s Fast & Furious 6.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast grossed $662 K to remain in second. Beauty and the Beast declined a slim 0.1 percent from Wednesday and 48.8 percent from last Thursday. For the week, Beauty and the Beast placed in third with $12.576 M. The film was down 37.5 percent from the previous frame and has grossed a massive $473.700 M in six weeks. Today Beauty and the Beast is set to pass the $474.545 M lifetime gross of 1999’s Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace to move into ninth place on the all-time unadjusted domestic list.

Fox and DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby held steady in third place with $526 K. The Boss Baby was down 1.8 percent from Wednesday and down 60.9 percent from last Thursday. The Boss Baby took second place for the week with $15.174 M. That represented a 35.3 percent decline from the previous week and brings the film’s four-week total to a stronger than expected $139.416 M.

Warner’s Going in Style placed in fourth with $451 K. Going in Style decreased 4.9 percent from Wednesday and a solid 40.6 percent from last Thursday. For the week, Going in Style placed in fourth with $6.979 M. Going in Style was down just 28.3 percent from the previous week and has grossed a solid $33.740 M in three weeks.

Disneynature’s Born in China rounded out Thursday’s top five with $371 K. Born in China declined 3.3 percent from Wednesday’s performance. Born in China took sixth place for the week with a seven-day start of $6.434 M. That was in line with pre-release expectations and places the film 4.1 percent behind the $6.707 M seven-day start of 2015’s Monkey Kingdom.

Fellow new releases Unforgettable and The Promise took seventh and eighth place with respective daily grosses of $356 K and $262 K. Warner’s Unforgettable decreased 4.6 percent from Wednesday, while Open Road’s The Promise fell a very sharp 28.0 percent. Unforgettable placed in fifth this week with a seven-day start of $6.539 M. The Promise had to settle for ninth with $5.624 M in its first seven days.
