Daily Box Office Report
Monday, April 24, 2017

By Daniel Garris

Universal’s The Fate of the Furious grossed $2.463 M on Monday to lead the daily box office for an eleventh consecutive day. The Fate of the Furious was down 76.5 percent from Sunday and down 71.1 percent from last Monday’s inflated post-Easter performance. The Fate of the Furious has grossed $165.767 M in eleven days. That is slightly below the film’s lofty expectations and 4.7 percent behind the $173.972 M eleven-day take of 2013’s Fast & Furious 6.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast placed in second with $634 K. Beauty and the Beast declined 76.1 percent from Sunday and 70.0 percent from last Monday. With a 39-day gross of $471.421 M, Beauty and the Beast currently ranks in tenth place on the all-time unadjusted domestic chart. The film will soon pass by the $474.55 M lifetime gross of 1999’s Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace to move into ninth place on the list.

Fox and DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby took third with $551 K. The Boss Baby decreased 84.5 percent from Sunday and 80.5 percent from last Monday. The Boss Baby continues to outpace expectations with $137.505 M in 25 days. That places the film 16.9 percent ahead of the $117.642 M 25-day take of last year’s Kung Fu Panda 3 and 4.2 percent behind the $143.604 M 25-day gross of 2015’s Home.

Open Road’s The Promise claimed fourth place with $446 K. The Promise was down just 59.8 percent from Sunday, which represented one of the day’s stronger daily percentage hold among wide releases. The Promise has grossed $4.542 M in four days, which is in line with the film’s modest expectations.

On the heels of a strong hold this past weekend, Warner’s Going in Style rounded out Monday’s top five with $423 K. Going in Style was down 66.5 percent from Sunday and down 47.8 percent from last Monday. Going in Style has grossed a solid $32.095 M through 18 days of release.

New releases Unforgettable and Born in China respectively placed in sixth and eighth on Monday. Warner’s Unforgettable declined 66.5 percent from Sunday to take in $385 K, while Disneynature’s Born in China decreased 71.9 percent from Sunday to gross $356 K. Through four days, Unforgettable has grossed a softer than expected $5.170 M, while Born in China is performing in line with expectations with $5.146 M.
