Daily Box Office Report
Wednesday, April 19, 2017

By Daniel Garris

Universal’s The Fate of the Furious grossed $4.892 M on Wednesday to lead the daily box office for a sixth consecutive day. However, the film was down a sharp 40.0 percent from Tuesday, which easily represented the largest daily percentage decline among wide releases yesterday. In comparison, 2015’s Furious 7 fell 31.0 percent on its first Wednesday to take in $9.188 M, while 2013’s Fast & Furious 6 was down 28.0 percent to gross $5.780 M. The Fate of the Furious is performing a bit below its lofty domestic expectations with a six-day start of $120.353 M. That places the film 34.5 percent behind the $183.702 M six-day start of Furious 7 and 8.0 percent behind the $130.846 M six-day take of Fast & Furious 6. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a second weekend gross of $37.0 M for The Fate of the Furious.

Fox and DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby grossed $1.380 M to remain in second place. The Boss Baby was down 27.1 percent from Tuesday and down a sizable 49.0 percent from last Wednesday’s Holy Week inflated performance. The Boss Baby continues to exceed expectations with a 20-day gross of $122.895 M. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a second place take of $11.2 M for The Boss Baby this weekend.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast held steady in third with $1.300 M. Beauty and the Beast declined 23.4 percent from Tuesday and a respectable 45.0 percent from last Wednesday. Beauty and the Beast has grossed $459.833 M in 34 days and yesterday overtook 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron ($459.006 M) to move into eleventh place on the all-time unadjusted domestic list. BoxOfficeReport is predicting a third place gross of $9.2 M for Beauty and the Beast this weekend.

Warner’s Going in Style continued to claim fourth with $783 K, while Sony’s Smurfs: The Lost Village rounded out the day’s unchanged top five with $675 K. Going in Style was down 28.0 percent from Tuesday and down just 31.1 percent from last Wednesday. Smurfs: The Lost Village decreased 26.5 percent from Tuesday and 42.5 percent from last Wednesday. Respective thirteen-day grosses stand at a respectable $26.001 M for Going in Style and at a softer than expected $27.880 M for Smurfs: The Lost Village.

Fox Searchlight’s Gifted remained in sixth place with $394 K. Gifted was down 27.9 percent from Tuesday and down a very slim 9.7 percent from last Wednesday. Gifted has grossed $5.811 M in eleven days and will be playing in 1,986 locations this weekend after receiving another expansion on Friday.
