By Daniel Garris

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast grossed $4.569 M on Tuesday to remain in first place. In the process, Beauty and the Beast surpassed the $400 M domestic mark yesterday. Beauty and the Beast is the 26th film ever to reach the $400 M unadjusted domestic milestone. Beauty and the Beast was up 44.3 percent over Monday and down 51.8 percent from last Tuesday (when the film was still playing on IMAX screens). With a 19-day gross of $401.074 M, Beauty and the Beast is running 54.9 percent ahead of the $258.999 M 19-day take of last year’s The Jungle Book and 29.4 percent ahead of the $309.887 M 19-day haul of 2012’s The Hunger Games.

Fox and DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby once again placed in a very close second with $4.370 M. The Boss Baby was up 41.8 percent over Monday and trailed Beauty and the Beast by just $199 K on Tuesday. The Boss Baby continues to exceed expectations with a five-day start of $57.651 M. In comparison to previous DreamWorks Animation films, The Boss Baby is running 6.0 percent ahead of the $54.405 M five-day take of last year’s Trolls and a slim 4.4 percent behind the $60.315 M five-day gross of 2015’s Home.

Paramount and DreamWorks’ Ghost in the Shell held steady in third place with $1.923 M. Ghost in the Shell was up 45.2 percent from Monday’s performance. With a five-day start of $21.923 M, Ghost in the Shell is performing poorly with its price tag in mind and below its already scaled back expectations. The film continues to closely mirror the start of 2011’s Sucker Punch, which grossed $21.810 M in its first five days of release.

Lionsgate’s Saban’s Power Rangers grossed $1.434 M to continue to claim fourth. Power Rangers increased 47.8 percent over Monday, but still decreased a sharp 59.6 percent from last Tuesday. Despite early front-loading, Power Rangers has grossed a solid $67.166 M in twelve days. That places the film 4.8 percent ahead of the $64.111 M twelve-day take of last year’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.

Warner’s Kong: Skull Island rounded out the day’s unchanged top five with $1.021 M. Kong: Skull Island was up 47.2 percent over Monday and down a solid 41.2 percent from last Tuesday. Kong: Skull Island has grossed a stronger than expected $149.349 M in 26 days and will surpass the $150 M domestic mark either today or Thursday.

Focus’ The Zookeeper’s Wife continued its noteworthy performance in moderate release with a tenth place take of $476 K. The film was up a very strong 65.3 percent over Monday and had a healthy daily per-location average of $880 from 541 locations. The Zookeeper’s Wife has grossed $4.052 M in five days and is scheduled to expand to additional locations on Friday.
