Disney’s Beauty and the Beast took in $6.053 M on Thursday to lead the daily box office for a 14th consecutive day. Beauty and the Beast was down 3.8 percent from Wednesday and down 44.5
percent from last Thursday. For the week, Beauty and the Beast grossed $119.311 M. That was down 47.8 percent from the film’s opening week performance and bring the film’s two-week total to a massive $347.917 M.
Beauty and the Beast currently ranks in 40th place on the all-time unadjusted domestic chart. Beauty and the Beast is running 65.9 percent ahead of the $209.657 M two-week take of last year’s The Jungle Book and 29.2 percent ahead of the $269.339 M two-week gross of 2012’s
The Hunger Games. |
Lionsgate’s Saban’s Power Rangers rounded out its first week of release with a second place take of $1.845 M. Power Rangers decreased 11.7 percent from Wednesday, which represented the
film’s second straight sharp daily percentage decline. While it is showing some early signs of front-loading, in the bigger picture Power Rangers exceeded expectations this week with a $50.562 M seven-day start.
That places the film 9.3 percent ahead of the $46.240 M seven-day start of last year’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (which decreased 4.5 percent on its first Thursday to gross $2.187 M). |
Turning towards this weekend’s new releases, Paramount’s Ghost in the Shell took in an estimated $1.8 M from Thursday evening shows that began at 7 PM, while Fox’s The Boss Baby grossed an
estimated $1.5 M from shows that began at 5 PM. As a family film that will display far more back-loading throughout the weekend, The Boss Baby was off to a much more encouraging Thursday evening start than Ghost in the Shell was.
As is normally the case, the Thursday night performances for Ghost in the Shell and The Boss Baby will both be counted towards the respective Friday opening day grosses of each film. |
Meanwhile, Warner’s Kong: Skull Island held steady in third on Thursday with $1.102 M. Kong: Skull Island was down 7.6 percent from Wednesday and down a very solid 41.4 percent from last
Thursday. Kong: Skull Island grossed $19.971 M for the week, which represented a 47.2 percent decline from the previous frame and brings the film’s three-week total to a stronger than expected $139.048 M. |
Fox’s Logan followed in fourth place with $875 K. Logan declined 7.6 percent from Wednesday and just 37.5 percent from last Thursday. For the week, Logan grossed $14.357 M.
Logan was down 42.1 percent from the previous week and has grossed $205.668 M through four weeks of release. |
Sony’s Life rounded out Thursday’s top five with $838 K. Life fell 9.5 percent from Wednesday’s performance and grossed a softer than expected $16.744 M in its first week of release.
That was 4.9 percent below the $17.613 M seven-day take of 2015’s Chappie (which decreased 15.9 percent on its first Thursday to gross $809 K). |
Universal’s Get Out placed in sixth with $758 K. Get Out was down 3.5 percent from Wednesday and down only 33.9 percent from last Thursday. For the week, Get Out grossed $12.256 M.
Get Out was down 35.3 percent from the previous frame and has grossed a terrific $151.074 M in five weeks. |
Warner’s CHIPS wrapped up its first week of release with a $541 K seventh place take. CHIPS was down 5.3 percent from Wednesday and performed below its already modest expectations this
week with a seven-day start of $10.313 M. |
