Captain Marvel Zooms Past $500M International Mark on Monday
Tuesday, March 19, 2019 (Morning Update)
Disney’s Captain Marvel took in an estimated $5.2 million on Monday to lead the daily box office for an eleventh consecutive day. Captain Marvel declined 73.4 percent from Sunday and a sizable, but understandable, 52.7 percent from last Monday. The eleven-day total for Captain Marvel stands at an exceptional $270.1 million. That places the film 6.7 percent ahead of the $253.12 million eleven-day haul of 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (which declined 77.5 percent on its second Monday to gross $4.70 million).

Yesterday saw Captain Marvel zoom past the $500 million international mark after grossing an estimated $13.2 million for the day internationally. To date, Captain Marvel has grossed $509.1 million internationally and a massive $779.2 million globally. On Monday, Captain Marvel also passed the $773.3 million total global gross of 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy to already become the tenth highest grossing film ever globally within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Current international totals by market for Captain Marvel include $133.8 million in China, $36.9 million in South Korea, $32.1 million in the United Kingdom, $25.3 million in Brazil, $25.2 million in Mexico, $18.9 million in Australia, $16.8 million in Indonesia, $16.4 million in Russia, $15.3 million in France, $14.5 million in Germany and $12.3 million in India.

Captain Marvel Takes $67.99M in Second Weekend; Totals $264.88M in Ten Days
Monday, March 18, 2019 (Afternoon Update)
With actuals now in, Disney’s Captain Marvel was down a bit from its weekend estimate, with a healthy second weekend take of $67.988 million. The film took a larger than expected hit from the St. Patrick’s Day holiday on Sunday. For the weekend, Captain Marvel decreased a sizable 55.7 percent from last weekend, but that was also a fairly average second weekend percentage decline for a film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The ten-day total for Captain Marvel stands at a very impressive $264.884 million, which represents the 20th largest ten-day start of all-time.

Captain Marvel Remains #1 with $69.3M in Second Weekend
Sunday, March 17, 2019 (Morning Update)
Disney’s Captain Marvel easily remained in first place at the box office this weekend with an estimated $69.32 million. That represented a sizable, but very reasonable, 54.8 percent decline from last weekend’s debut. Most films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) tend to experience second weekend declines in the area of 50 percent to 62 percent, which places the second weekend percentage decline of Captain Marvel in the middle of that range. Captain Marvel registered the 18th largest second weekend gross of all-time. Captain Marvel also zoomed past the $200 million domestic mark this weekend and has grossed a very strong $266.21 million through ten days of release. That represents the 19th largest ten-day start of all-time. Captain Marvel is running a healthy 7.2 percent ahead of the $248.42 million ten-day haul of 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (which declined a similar 55.5 percent in its second weekend to gross $65.26 million). Captain Marvel will begin to see much tougher competition next weekend when Universal’s highly anticipated Us enters the marketplace this coming Friday.

Internationally, Captain Marvel grossed an estimated $119.7 million this weekend. That brings the film’s international total to $494.0 million and current global haul to a massive $760.2 million. This weekend saw Captain Marvel debut with an estimated $5.6 million in Japan. Current international totals for Captain Marvel include $132.0 million in China, $36.5 million in South Korea, $30.9 million in the United Kingdom, $24.3 million in Brazil, $22.4 million in Mexico, $18.5 million in Australia, $16.1 million in Indonesia, $16.0 million in Russia, $14.6 million in France, $14.0 million in Germany and $11.8 million in India. Globally, Captain Marvel is already the eleventh largest Marvel Cinematic Universe film of all-time and the film will soon pass by the $773.3 million global total of 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy to move into tenth place on that list.

IMAX grosses for Captain Marvel currently total an estimated $56.0 million globally. To date, Captain Marvel has grossed $33.5 million in IMAX internationally and $22.5 million in IMAX domestically.

Captain Marvel Zooms Past $200M Domestic Mark After $19.05M Friday Take
Saturday, March 16, 2019 (Morning Update)
Disney’s Captain Marvel began its second weekend of release with an estimated $19.05 million on Friday. Captain Marvel was up 105.9 percent from Thursday and down a very sharp, but understandable, 69.1 percent from last Friday's opening day performance. Captain Marvel passed the $200 million domestic mark on Friday (the film’s eighth day of release) and has grossed an exceptional $215.94 million in eight days. That represents the 21st largest eight-day start of all-time. Captain Marvel is running 8.2 percent ahead of the $199.65 million eight-day take of 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (which grossed $16.49 million on its second Friday). Given the film’s strength last Saturday, Captain Marvel looks to be headed for a second weekend take in the neighborhood of $70 million.

In other box office news, Lionsgate and CBS Films' Five Feet Apart and Paramount’s Wonder Park both exceeded expectations on Friday with respective estimated opening day grosses of $5.37 million and $5.35 million. For the weekend, Wonder Park looks to be headed for a start in the mid-teens to high-teens, while Five Feet Apart should be more front-loaded towards Friday with a three-day start in the low-teens.

Friday, March 15, 2019 (Morning Update)
Disney’s Captain Marvel rounded out its first weekend of release with an estimated $9.1 million on Thursday. Captain Marvel increased 6.0 percent over Wednesday, which is a good sign for the film as it heads into its second weekend of release. Captain Marvel grossed an exceptional $196.8 million in its first week of release. That represented the seventh largest seven-day start ever for a film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the 21st largest seven-day start of all-time. Captain Marvel is running a healthy 7.4 percent ahead of the $183.16 million seven-day launch of 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (which declined 4.9 percent on its first Thursday to gross $7.16 million).

Tuesday, March 12, 2019 (Morning Update)
Captain Marvel continued to lead the daily box office with ease on Monday with an estimated $10.9 million. That represented the third largest first-Monday gross ever for the month of March; behind only 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($15.04 million) and 2017’s Beauty and the Beast ($13.53 million), and just ahead of the $10.82 million first-Monday gross of 2012’s The Hunger Games. Monday’s performance for Captain Marvel was down 71.9 percent from Sunday. The four-day start for Captain Marvel stands at an exceptional $164.3 million. That is a healthy 5.1 percent ahead of the $156.37 million four-day start of 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (which declined 74.8 percent on its first Monday to gross $9.86 million).

Captain Marvel will obviously zoom past the $500 million global mark today.

Captain Marvel Arrives with $153.43M Domestically
Monday, March 11, 2019 (Afternoon Update)
With actuals now in, Disney’s Captain Marvel debuted with $153,433,423 this weekend. That represented the third largest March debut ever and the 18th largest opening weekend of all-time. This weekend’s daily breakdown for Captain Marvel was $61,715,051 for Friday, $52,872,536 for Saturday and $38,845,836 for Sunday.

Captain Marvel Arrives with $153.0M Domestically; Massive $455.0M Globally
Sunday, March 10, 2019 (Morning Update)
Disney’s Captain Marvel lived up to its massive expectations with a massive estimated debut of $153.0 million this weekend. That represented the third largest March opening ever (behind only 2017’s Beauty and the Beast and 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) and the seventh largest opening ever for a film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Captain Marvel registered the 18th largest opening of all-time and if the film has a stronger than expected Sunday hold, Captain Marvel could still potentially pass the $155.08 million start of 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story for 17th place. Captain Marvel was also especially impressive for a non-sequel. Pre-release anticipation for the Brie Larson led Captain Marvel was boosted by the film serving as the first female-led film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and by the film’s release between Avengers: Infinity War and the upcoming Avengers: Endgame. Captain Marvel opened a healthy 4.4 percent ahead of the $146.51 million launch of 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Captain Marvel started out with an estimated $61.38 million on Friday (which included an estimated $20.7 million from Thursday night shows that began at 6PM), declined just 13.6 percent on Saturday to take in $53.04 million (which is a very good first Saturday hold for a film of this size) and is estimated to decline 27.3 percent on Sunday to gross $38.58 million. The audience breakdown for Captain Marvel skewed 55 percent male, 45 percent female, 63 percent over the age of 25 and 37 percent under the age of 25. Family audiences made up an estimated 18 percent of the film’s overall audience. IMAX grosses made up an estimated $14.1 million (9.2 percent) of this weekend’s overall domestic gross, while 3D grosses accounted for 14 percent.

Critical reviews for Captain Marvel have been good, but not great (especially by more recent MCU standards). However, the film looks to be going over better with moviegoers, as Captain Marvel received a strong A rating on CinemaScore. Captain Marvel will no doubt continue to dominate the box office in a big way next weekend, but competition will soon get much tougher with Universal’s Us entering the marketplace on March 22, fellow Disney release Dumbo opening on March 29 and Warner’s fellow superhero film Shazam! arriving on April 5 (all three films are expected to be strong box office performers).

Captain Marvel was extremely impressive internationally with an estimated launch of $302.0 million (from all international markets, except for Japan). That places the global launch for Captain Marvel at a massive $455.0 million, which represents the sixth largest global debut of all time. Captain Marvel performed especially strong in Asia this weekend. International starts for the film by market included $89.3 million in China, $24.1 million in South Korea, $16.8 million in the United Kingdom, $13.4 million in Brazil, $12.8 million in Mexico, $10.7 million in Australia, $10.1 million in Indonesia, $9.8 million in Russia, $9.2 million in France, $7.8 million in Germany, $6.9 million in India, $6.6 million in Thailand, $6.4 million in Taiwan and $6.3 million in the Philippines. Captain Marvel grossed an estimated $21.9 million from IMAX screens internationally (including $10.4 million from China) and $36.0 million from IMAX globally. Given this weekend’s start, it is extremely likely that Captain Marvel will eventually pass the $1 billion global mark. Captain Marvel will debut in Japan this coming Friday (March 15).

Friday, March 8, 2019 (Morning Update)
Disney’s Captain Marvel was off to an expectedly strong start on Thursday night with an estimated $20.7 million from preview shows that began at 6PM. That represents the fifth largest preview gross ever for a film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), behind only last year’s Avengers: Infinity War ($39.0 million), 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron ($27.6 million), last year’s Black Panther ($25.2 million) and 2016’s Captain America: Civil War ($25.0 million). Thursday night’s performance for Captain Marvel was stronger than those of a number recent Marvel films, including last year’s Deadpool 2 ($18.6 million), 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($17.0 million), 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming ($15.4 million) and 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok ($14.5 million). Captain Marvel also registered the 16th largest preview gross ever for a Friday release.

Pre-release excitement for Captain Marvel has been boosted by the film serving as the first female-led film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and by the film’s release between Avengers: Infinity War and the upcoming Avengers: Endgame. While it is obviously very early, if Captain Marvel continues to perform similarly to other recent Marvel Cinematic Universe films throughout the weekend, the film would likely be headed for an opening weekend performance somewhere in the area of $140 million to $165 million (with a wider range of $135 million to $170 million still being possible).
